Global templates (2000, SR-1)

Hi;

I have a big intranet site with dozens of webs/subwebs. These are maintained by reps in each department. I would like to create global page templates for them to use, but am not sure how to make them available to all.

I've used the "save in web" option, yet the templates show up in the "file, new, page" dialogue box when I'm in OTHER webs. <img src=/S/dizzy.gif border=0 alt=dizzy width=15 height=15> This shouldn't be, should it? If I don't use that option, it gets saved only to my desktop, which doesn't help anyone but me.

I know FP wrote files to my desktop when I originally saved the templates, so maybe that's why. But how can I get all the department users to enjoy the same result? Will they have to go into the original web where the templates were created and do a save on them so FP writes them to their desktop? Otherwise I'm faced with copying the _sharedtemplates folder into every web/subweb.

The templates get saved in two locations in the web and to your local templates directory (depends on what OS you are using). That is why you see them when you open other webs.
When your users open the web where the templates are saved - those templates will be loaded into their local directories.
This can make maintenance and updating a bit of a pain <img src=/S/headthrob.gif border=0 alt=headthrob width=15 height=15>. Particularly if you note that any links (for instance to .css files) are relative to the web in question.
I don't know why MS has not offered a better solution for those of us working with huge websites with multiple authors (this is what FP's strength is supposed to be after all).
The best solution I've found so far is to go back to the "old" concept of a template, that is the file that one opens up, edits and saves under a different name. FP will not change any relative links this way - but it is clunky. Usually, I keep the "templates" in a read only directory so that users can import the files as required and they can't be accidentally changed. I keep that directory up-to-date (one location).
