Shortcut for 'Switch User' (XP SP1)

Loved Woody's tip in the latest XP Watch (No. 2-37, 9/30/02) about a shortcut (to put in the quick launch bar) that accomplishes the same thing as pressing windows key-L (fast user switching, or lock computer). Anyone know where to find the "Switch User" icon (green square with arrows)? Anyone know how to create a similar "log off" shortcut?

I do not know what I am doing different, but since I started using Windows NT 3.0 and then NT4.0, 2K and now in XP Pro, "Windows key + L" always and still does pop up the "UNLOCK COMPUTER" pane. This will lock the computer untile the using account password is entered. <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>

Yep. This is the same shortcut for "Lock computer". However, if you have fast user switching enabled, it will switch users (even faster). Dunno, but it might not work if you password protect your profile...

I do NOT use fast switcher and really do not see a good use for it.

I'm not sure where you'd find the fast user switching icon. The Log Off and Shut down icons are in %SystemRoot%system32SHELL32.dll, which has numerous icons. I used the log off icon for the lock workstation shortcut.

I couldn't find a shortcut for logging off that worked in XP. There are some listed for other versions on Rob van der Woude's scripting pages, which looks like an excellent resource. Look under Batch files for the RunDLL or Shutdown and Reboot sections. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to do it in 2K or XP - yet.

Hi Roger, Looks like this will do what you want: http://www.jsiinc.com/subg/tip3100/rh3153.htm. Since XP is very similar to Windows 2000 the win2k tip probably will work.
