ambiguous name error locks Excel (Excel 2000)

Hi all,
I've searched the forums for all posts on 'ambiguous name' and none of them mention the error I see.

I was renaming text boxes in a form and accidently duplicated the name of one field. Ok, no big deal I can fix that, but NOOOOO, Excel is now locked up with the error message:

"Could not set the Name property. Ambiguous Name." It has two buttons, [OK] but the cursor is a circle with line through it and you can't do anything, can't click OK, can't quit or exit

I've had this happen several times and the only way out is to kill from task manager. According to the task manager, Excel is running and the system idle process is at 95% so the system is happily doing nothing.

Is this a known bug, it's so frustrating!!

Deb

Thanks for the MSKB reference. I did try the ESC key but it didn't work. I had this happen a few times. The article mentioned pressing Enter after entering the name which I don't usually do so I'll try and pick up that habit.

If possible, try saving the file, closing it and then reopen the file. I have found that this releases the duplicated textbox name.

Yes, I tried that too. No keys worked, I couldn't save, quit, break, escape - nothing. I'll remember these things you and the other poster mentioned for next time it happens

Just now I opened a new/blank workbook and tried to duplicate it intentionally and couldn't. I added a form with two buttons that had the same name. After entering the duplicate name on button 2, I did get the 'ambiguous name' error message, but the cursor was not the circle with a line through it. I was able to press OK and just continue.

Dunno why it locks up on me... yet another reason to save often and to save your code modules separately (in case Excel decides to next time you want to open the file).

Deb,
I did a quick search in the MSKB for "ambiguous name" and found Q220613 which matches the problem exactly.

It says that if you press Esc your cursor will return to normal!
