    Re: Reply Notifications

Stranger things have happened. I have in the past suffered the exact same phenomena without fully understanding why.
At a guess it has been a blip somehwere twixt the Lounge server and your ISP.
Very occassionally (thank goodness) we get a service message from our ISP explaining they have a backlog of mail, caused by anything from a server failure or even a severe DOS attack. Once the problem is resolved they slowly release the backlog back into the sytem. 24 hours, however, does seem quite a delay.
That said, I personally wouldn't be concerned unless it it continues more than another day.

Thanks for the reply. I most always check into the Lounge at least once a day at the minimum so I wasn't really concerned about missing replies, I just thought I should mention it. The strange part was receiving messages dated later that I received first.

If no one else is having the same problem, I guess it could have something to do with Road Runner. If it happens again I'll check with them.

    Again, thanks.

    Re: Reply Notifications

This probably has no bearing on the problem you described, but I've noticed in three or four occasions in the past few days that sometimes The Lounge pages are really slow to respond, if at all. When it has happened to me, since I'm on a DSL connection, I usually go to a couple of other sites real quick to see if my ISP or DSL connection are having trouble. Never have detected anything. I figured that the Lounge servers (wherever they are?) might have been experiencing a glitch, 'cause if I waited 30 minutes and tried again, everything would be back to its normal, speedy self!

    Re: Reply Notifications

There are other reasons the Lounge can be slow.
Check Who's Online - there may be 50 people all doing searches for the word "a". Or if it is 0500UTC all the archives are being mailed out. There are backups of the database to be made, maintenance updates to be uploaded and scheduled deletions of expired posts all going on at some point.
    And all from Claude's wine cellar deep in Australia <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/heavy.gif border=0 alt=heavy width=40 height=34>

Seriously, though, just the general weight of traffic to the Lounge's hosting ISP can probably affect your (and my) access time. I too notice slow times on our ADSL line and that's just to our ISP 1/2 a mile away!

(BTW, our ADSL service in the UK comes complete with a 'contention ratio of between 20:1 and 50:1 depending on how much you pay. On the cheaper service, you only need to be sharing your connection with 49 other bods to suddenly find your actual connection speed has dropped from 512K to just over 10K!)

Not sure if this is an explanation, but yesterday a software upgrading problem at WorldCom's UUNet created a number of problems in web traffic. See

    Re: Reply Notifications

There are several possible scenarios, some intermittent, some permanent:

Every now and then, maybe twice a month ISPs like home.com disappears, and all emails to anyone@home.com bounce back with the message unknown host home.com. But, next day, everything is fine again. After three consecutive days of this type of error, all email notifications to those addresses are automatically cancelled. A lot of loungers don't clear their mailbox, emails bounce with a "mailbox full" error. 2 days in a row, all notifications cancelled.

Some notifications get bounced by firewalls: If a post contains VBA code for example, some firewalls interpret this as VB Script and bounce the message. Others object to three x's in a row, used sometimes by posters as in aaa bbb etc., they get bounced by firewalls because of sexual contents.

All those bounces are returned to lounge admin. There were no bounces from your ISP in the last few days. As for notifications arriving after 24 hours, if there was a huge mail que somewhere or other, that's always possible. The most delayed email I ever got was delayed by 187 days. It was stuck on a server which was disconnected for that period of time <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

In your case, it was probably caused by the worldcom fiasko.
    Cheers, Claude.

Thanks for all of your inputs. I just hope that what I have experienced was something that was very out of the ordinary. I have to believe it was because it was the first time anything like this has happened. Of course, I have experienced some slow response from the Lounge

    Re: Reply Notifications

I had a similar experience, the first thing I noticed was my direct connection to the mail server using the run command was not happening, yet email would get delivered. It turned out to be the firewall I had loaded last month, so I uninstalled it and a stack of stuff came in as well as the function to access my mail server directly. I have loaded a different firewall to trial it and see if this one "bounces" anything back. At least it did occur to me the firewall might be causing the problem, just as Claude has said. <img src=/S/crazy.gif border=0 alt=crazy width=15 height=15>

    Re: Reply Notifications

Well I found out that the up to 30-hour delay might be caused by my ISP after all. I had it happen again and this time it was a 30 hour delay and from a source other than the Lounge. I have sent a question to Road Runner over 24 hours ago but so far they haven

Yeah, they advertise answers in hours, not days by using email. We need more truth in advertising on the WEB.

    Hours are hours and days are days. Your ISP may not be counting days until it's more than 48 hours <img src=/S/dizzy.gif border=0 alt=dizzy width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/brainwash.gif border=0 alt=brainwash width=15 height=15>

If you were just a little further south I could recommend a great ISP, but I don't think they go any further north than Cincinnati <img src=/S/phonecall.gif border=0 alt=phonecall width=45 height=19>

Mind you, if they had a 30-hour delay on some emails and you only emailed them 24 hours ago, they might not receive your message for another 6 hours!
