WinXP/SP1 - Outlook Express corrupt? (WinXP Pro, SP1)

I installed SP1 at the end of September. No apparent problems at first, however now I'm not so sure. I use Second Copy 2000 daily to back up certain data files to a CD-RW. It operates seamlessly, without intervention and is an excellent product. Since I installed SP1, though, Second Copy stalls on the backup when it reaches my Outlook Express .dbx folders. The CD-RW stops spinning, the light goes off and it's apparent that nothing's being copied. However Windows Task Manager reports that Second Copy is still running when I do a Ctrl-Alt-Del to see what processes are going on. It does not say "not responding". The only way I can get out of the "stall" is to stop Second Copy using said Task Manager. Then the CD-RW drive remains locked - cannot be opened or contents viewed - until I shut down the computer completely, then turn it back on. All other files are being copied by Second Copy without any problem. I tried to investigate within Outlook Express to see if I have invalid files or something. I even changed the "Store folder" in case it was corrupt, but no luck. I don't think this is a Second Copy problem; I believe it is being caused by some sort of corruption within Outlook Express that may possibly have occurred when I installed SP1. Any help would be greatly appreciated. <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

Could be that the Oulook dbx file is in use and can not be copied.

No, I always make sure that Outlook Express and any of the other data files that I backup are closed before Second Copy 2000 starts running.

But with XP the program may be closed but the file is still linked to your account and is in use. You need to log out and use another log in to be sure that NO files are in use. Any file listed under your account, in the "Documents and Settings" folder can be in sue if you are logged in as that user. Outlook and Outlook Express may take up to ten minutes to close out the use of your Outlook files, depending on the size of them.

Thanks for your response Dave. I've now heard from Centered Systems (the makers of Second Copy), who've pointed me towards a known issue with Roxio (which is what I'm using) Direct CD utility. Specifically, once SP1 is installed, "When writing large (100 MB+ estimated) files to a Direct CD formatted disc the process hangs indefinitely.

Resolution: Currently there is no fix or workaround for this problem. Customers will need to contact Roxio to determine if/when a fix will be available.

More information: Roxio is aware of this problem but no new information is available. Debugging information was made available to to Roxio on 8/20 shows the problem to be in Roxio

Good news! I emailed my problem to Centered Systems support (the makers of Second Copy 2000). They responded promptly, even on the weekend, as they have done before, and gave me a tip about a Roxio DirectCD known issue with the WinXP Service Pack. I went to the Roxio website and downloaded their latest patch for Easy CD Creator/DirectCD (version 5.3.1.154 SP4), installed it, rebooted, and voila, now my Second Copy is backing up my Outlook Express folders without any trouble.

I just want to add here that I've had occasion before to correspond with Centered Systems. The quality of their support is absolutely second to none! They always respond promptly and they've always been able to diagnose my problems accurately. Those guys are the greatest!

    GG--
Glad to here about some good tech support. Second Copy/Centered is an excellent back up program. I have learned the hard way that whatever you have Roxio, it is always a good idea to hawk the website for patch updates--not having one for Roxio Go Back lite supplied in Norton System Works wrecked my XP partitions--cost me XP--several months ago and the patch wasn't up there until after Roxio had been put in Norton boxes for months saying everything was "XP Compatible" but it wasn't. The KB article from Microsoft was interesting--they wanted you to fix the blue screen by going into Windows and uninstalling RGB and putting in the patch only you couldn't go into Windows and do the uninstall when you weren't able to boot into Windows no matter what you tried or did. Glad to hear this is fixed.

    Hi ggcameron:

Glad you found the source of the problem. As a side "strategy" note, I think that you'd be doing yourself a huge favor researching better methods to archive those important e-mails. OE (and Outlook for that matter) are NOT good places to store messages for long periods of time. You've stumbled upon only one problem that results when your data file gets too large - there's many more out there. At the least, consider saving the e-mails as .txt files in a separate directory and delete them from your working OE file. Text files have been around for a very long time and can be read by a variety of different applications (Notepad, Wordpad, word processing programs, browsers) so you are better protected from obsolesence that way. Good luck!
