Footer page numbering (Word 2002, WinXP Pro)

I have some very strange problems with page numbering in the footer(s) of a 48 page document
1 While the document is 48 pages in length the footer page numbering shows 49 but only on the even pages.
    2 The odd pages show that the document is 697 pages in length but only when the document is printed ! <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23> <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>

The document is formatted as having a different first page with different headers on odd and even pages but the same footer. This has been done to accommodate a specific style.

I have searched the Word forum and can't find anything like my problem.

    cheers

    Cool!

I can't offer much at this point, but...what do you see when you do the Print Preview thing? Which view do you usually work in? Do you have the Show/Hide button turned on to show paragraph marks and--perhaps more importantly--page breaks?

One thing that can cause page numbering to zoom up to a huge number of pages is having Keep With Next and/or Keep Lines Together (usually and) on for several pages worth of text. Turn on your show/hide button and see if each paragraph has a small black square in the left margin.

If you're using styles, remove Keep With Next and Keep Lines Together from the paragraph formatting for each style. If you're not using styles, select all the text, then go to Format/Paragraph and click on the Line and Page Breaks tab. Deselect both Keep With Next and Keep Lines Together.

This is a pretty common problem for people who overuse these two choices. You want to make sure that you know when they are applied and that you use them judiciously and only where really needed.

    Lee

I am not using styles but your second suggestion worked a treat.

Glad I could help. I've seen that particular problem a number of times.
