SP1 Necessary for future updates (XP Home)

Hi, I was told recently in my local computer shop that unless you had SP1 installed you would shortly be unable to get updates. They said this was to stop pirate copies from being updated. Is this true? I downloaded it last month and promptly lost Outlook Express and all my Network settings along with any provision to set them up again. I had to uninstall it and am now reluctant to try it again.I would very much like to hear if anyone knows anything about this.I have searched around, but can find nothing relating to this information. Thank you very much.

Re: SP1 Necessary for future updates (XP Home)

Service Pack 1 will not install if you have a pirated key. When you go to Windows Update, it will check your product key (and in fact has been doing so for months). I'm not entirely clear on how it will be managed, but I would guess that it will check for an SP1 level of updates and not display anything past that at Windows Update without the service pack installed.

The Outlook Express issue is known and documented - if you have multiple identities set up, life gets rough. There are several posts and articles online that document the problem and its workarounds. Try searching the Lounge for more details.

Re: SP1 Necessary for future updates (XP Home)

Thanks for your reply Mark. I have a legal copy of XP Home.,and I have read how to fix OE. My problem is that I was told that if I didn`t install SP1, even with my legal copy, I still wouldn`t be able to take any updates from the Website. If this is true, it means that everyone will have to install SP1 (whether they want it or not) if they want the necessary critical updates in the future. Hope this clarifies my question. Thank you.

Hi Elaine, many legal users of XP Home, have done exactly what you have done, loaded the SP1 then got rid of it because of problems. Most who have not yet loaded it will not do so until there seems to be a bug fix for the reported problems that exist. I understand what you are saying, easily checked by logging onto the site. I have found in previous O/S it is necessary to load SP1 before further updates can be loaded after its release, makes sense for further fixes to follow on.

Thanks Cyberdance. I understand now.Looks like the best thing for me to do is to wait until I hear that SP1 has been fixed as I am still getting the updates with no problems at the moment. Perhaps there will be a posting here when it is safe to download it. I am learning from my mistakes, and will not jump in so soon next time! Thanks again for your help.

Hi there Elaine, its often confusing, you can go to the critical updates site and select only specific downloads you require (as in previous O/S), look at the list of updates available, and only download those you feel may be useful, if SP1 is required to be installed BEFORE you can download a particular update, the site will tell you "SP1" must be installed beforehand. Personally the reason I have not chosen to install a SP1 for some time after it's release date is because I like to see what problems have been reported before I go to the trouble. Also SP1 for XP is a large install, which for me, who is only using a 56 modem, would take until Christmas 2006! In cases like this, after a couple of months have gone by, SP1 is available on cd, this is a far better solution for 56 modem folks. Those of you on 24/7 cable, no doubt do not have to be so concerned with the size of the download. We all learn by our mistakes, do not be frightened to ask in here, it is a great way to grown and learn. People in this forum are really TRIFFIK.....

Cyberdance,How wise you are to wait before installing!.As I said before I am learning by my mistakes (as we all do) and will follow your example in future. You are right about the people in this Forum too. I have had much advice here, and now feel more comfortable about asking questions since everyone is so tolerant and helpful. One day I hope to be able to help someone and return the favours. I have Broadband so am luckier than you in that respect. Hope you get your CD soon and have a trouble-free installation.Good Luck and thanks again

Re: SP1 Necessary for future updates (XP Home)

Elaine--
It is going to take me a couple laps on this thread to comprehend it all, but although MS will continue to make efforts to combat piracy, right now I think you have the option of declining to get SP1 and waiting--nothing wrong with that--and getting any of the updates you need.

Remember, for the most part, SP1 was an amalgam of previous and new fixes--predominantly secuirty patches that had been issued in the past for the OS and IE. I don't know of any requirement for any download right now that mandates SP1 as a prerequisite. I would be surprised if that happens--if they want to security product key/hash check you they can and have as Mark says.

This List of SP1 Bugs from the KB gives you some of the issues that have come up that have been statistically enough to prompt a KB response.

From Q302878 Changes to Product Activation in Windows XP SP1-- a section toward the bottom of the KB with FAQ's on this, it appears they have made additional efforts to stop you from getting SP1 itself if you don't have the right product key, but not other updates. Scroll toward the bottom of the KB to avoid reading a lot of other unrelated stuff.

According to (Total Article Count: 317) Categorized List of Fixes in Windows SP1 there are 317 KB Articles here detailing 317 fixes and the XP fixes keep rolling out at the rate of around 2-3 per week.

Elaine--if you are going to wait on SP1, fix this large security hole currently on your XP that they fixed in SP1 that Tech TV's Screen Savers outline here. SP1 fixes it so people with SP1 don't need to do this fifteen second fix. Fix for the XP Security Hole

If you use XP, perform a search for a file on your C drive called "uplddrvinfo.htm" (without quotes).

Once you've found the file, delete it or rename it. Doing so will not hinder your ability to use Windows XP.

Hello defrag,
I think you have understood it fine.Tomorrow I will read the KB articles you have pointed me to,as my brain is starting to shutdown tonight. I do not mean to take SP1 at the moment and thank you for the warning about the security hole. I think I am OK there as I read this Forum every day and learned about it. I went to Steve Gibson`s site and downloaded XPdite which is a safe replacement file.I was really pleased that I managed that!!!! I find the KB rather daunting as I can usually never manage to find anything (have seen other posts saying this), but you have found the articles for me. Thank you very much.

Elaine--

FWIW, there are a number of KB tricks, (one being to put in How to, another being to put the main application, problem, OS, thing of interest first in your phrase), but I get quicker results and closer to where I want to go by always clicking onto "Advanced Search" on the left after I go to the KB or the purple "Search the Knowledge Base" (they bring you to the same search box)--and then I take the number of articles up to the max--150. This seems to get more specific results than using that first box on the left when you hit the page.

Re: SP1 Necessary for future updates (XP Home)

Elaine, Those were good tips from defrag. However, I've read somewhere (damn the bad memory - I've go to start writing this stuff down) that SP-1 will be required to get patches in the future. I don't recall if that is for all patches or some subset. I'll try to find something more definite at work but I've been swamped so I can't promise anything.

hth,

Re: SP1 Necessary for future updates (XP Home)

Hello Jo.
Thanks for replying. That is exactly what I was trying to find out. If this proves to be true I hope Microsoft get all the problems fixed before applying this rule. Doesn`t seem to be very fair for the people who might not want the big download if they are short of space. There will be some who are happy enough with XP the way it is. I am one of them after the disaster I had. I hope you manage to find out and let us know,
. Thanks very much
Elaine.

Elaine, Well I found something. Looks like it is about product activation and some fairly well known keys.

Re: SP1 Necessary for future updates (XP Home)

Joe--
Thanks for the link; but what I took from the link is that they are going to enhance protection of their Product Key for Windows XP period and include that enhanced protection if someone chooses to get SP1. I don't see where they say that if you don't get SP1 in a specified window of time, (excuse the pun), you can't continue to receive updates if you have a valid product key for Windows XP with or without SP1.
