    Can't dial up (XP SP1)

    I have just got a Dell laptop with XP Home. When I try to dial up, the computer will dial & handshake & then drops the line with a 720 error. I have tried several ISPs & have checked that the settings are OK, but I still cannot connect.

    I tried the ISP wizard in Windows, but I get the same error!

If so check the Dell site for the error reading 720 http://support.euro.dell.com/uk/en/home.asp if unable to locate that error reading contact the support folks, they are pretty good. I am sure you have inserted the correct settings into the DUN (assuming you are connecting via an ISP, rather than 24/7 cable connection, yes)? If so, maybe you have tried by using the Wizard as well as inserted the DUN settings manually. Perhaps one has confused the other, hence stuff up when trying to connect. I have setup XP Home laptops to connect to my ISP (as I do not have a need for cable) and have found no trouble at all with Dell. But I have found on occasion when colleagues and friends have had problems they contact Dell via telephone support or online support and have found them very helpful. The only other thought I have to offer is to ask if you have any confusion relating to the Administrator of XP, or are you the sole user, hence Administrator? Sorry if I am confusing you further, but I am typing as thoughts come to mind, of course you are connecting from the UK, which may be different. I hope something I have written may be of help.     Thanks for your reply.

    After many hours on helplines to Dell & ISPs, with Dell blaming the TCP settings & the ISPs saying they were OK, I formatted the hard disk and reinstalled the OS.

    DUN then worked first time!
