Mergefield, checkboxes and Form Protecton (Word 2000 SR1)

I have one of many forms using mergefields, checkboxes., and text fields. On one form I need checkboxes but the same line needs two mergefields and a Fillin field so it seems I can't protect the form. Nor can I section off the checkbox portion. I don't have the checkboxes in a table.
Example (Checkbox) A statement of (fillin) pages dated (mergefield) has been added to this specification

Is it possible to make the checkbox work? I can't change the wording - it has to read exactly this way - legal docs, you know!

I'm confused - I just created a template with exactly your wording and fields, protected it and ran it, and it worked fine.

What is the problem you're having?

PS I am working in Word97, but I can't see anything here that would be different in 2000.

    Hi Helen:
Following up on what Beryl said. You can't do a mail merge, using your form as the main document, while your form is protected, but you can do a merge & then protect the form.
