Unable to open database (2000 SR1)

Attempting to open an Access database, I receive the following pop-up:

    *****************************
The database is in an unexpected state; Microsoft Access can't open it.

The database has been converted from a prior version of Microsoft Access by using the DAO CompactDatabase method instead of the Convert Database command on the tools menu (Database Utilities submenu). This has left the database in a partially converted state.
    ***************************
This database has been created and used for long with Access 2000 (Office 2000 Premium). No pack nor conversion attempts were made before.

Can someone bring any light on what to do. Your help is much appreciated.

    Thanks.
    Enrique.

Re: Unable to open database (2000 SR1)

Before trying the following, make a backup copy of the database.

Try to open the database while you hold the Shift key down. This bypasses any startup options set for the database.

If you can open the database now, select Tools/Database Utilities/Compact and Repair Database... Hopefully this corrects the problem.

If you can't open the database, of if Compact and Repair fails, the Jet Compact utility from Microsoft may be able to repair the database. You can download it here. The download comes with a Word document that explains how to use the utility.

If this doesn't work either, create a new empty database and try to import all database objects from the problem database (File/Get External Data/Import...). If you're lucky, you'll be able to import everything. You will have to re-create the startup options (if any) manually.

Hans: Thanks a million for your prompt response. Unfortunately, as of the three different solutions that you mention, I had already unsuccessfully tried the first and the third and tried yesterday, unsuccessfully as well, your second option. <img src=/S/disappointed.gif border=0 alt=disappointed width=15 height=15>

I'm afraid you're out of luck then.

I hope you have a recent working backup (you do make backups frequently, don't you?).
