    personal.xls (2002 (10.2614.3311))

I have an application that generates csv files that I then view in Excel. I will often open 20+ of these files from within Excel without any problems. Recently, I tried to do this from Explorer (selected all the files I wanted and right clicked to open them). They all opened ok but when tried to close them I had to close Excel for each file I had opened. I guess that I was running multiple instances of excel??

I now find that my macros in personal.xls don't work. I have tried recording a simple macro to try and find out what was happening. When I try this, I get a message 'Personal Macro Workbook in the startup folder must stay open for recording' If I open personal.xls I am able to record the macro and it will run from the VBA window but I can't link it to a toolbar button. When I try to link it, everything seems ok but when I then test it, the macro box opens (ie., the list of avaialble macros) but the 'prompt' line is blank and even if i select the macro it still won't run. If I go to edit, I can run the macro from within the vba module.

    Can anybody help??

Have you tried opening your personal.xls and then hiding it, so that it resident all the time Excel is open? That is the traditional use of the personal.xls prior to XP. I'd be interested in how and if things have changed.

Tried that. I can then see the macros in personal.xls and can run them via tools|macro|macros but I still can't link the macros to toolbar buttons and when I close and reopen excel, personal.xls isn't re-opened.

    Thanks

What O/S are you running on?

    Catharine,
I am running Windows XP Home edition. The puzzling thing is that everything was working fine until I opened all of the files from inside explorer. I wonder whether when I was clicking on all the 'OK' buttons I have inadvertently switched something off?

I have just run the 'detect and repair' option with no change.

    Re: personal.xls (2002 (10.2614.3311))

    Jan,
thanks for your input, but unfortunately, none of this seems to have helped.

    "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeExcel.exe" /Automation - no change.
I don't beleive that there are any hidden workbooks (the 'unhide' option is dimmed)

    - Try locating the XLSTART directory, move everything from there - the only file in there was personal.xls. I moved it out and restarted excel. I then recorded a macro and a new personal.xls file was created in my XLSTART directory but I still can't link this to a custom toolbar button. (I had also renamed all *.xlb files so this was a standard toolbar). when I close and reopen excel, the personal.xls file is not reopened.

    - In XL: Tools, Addins, note the ones checked and uncheck them one at the time, each time restarting XL - no change
    - In XL, Tools, options, general. Check if a path is entered after "Alternate startup file location". Clear it. - no path nominated

    "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeExcel.exe" /Safe - no change

"C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeExcel.exe" /Regserver - when I ran this, windows installer started, then microsoft office professional was configured then I was returned to the desktop.

Yet another possible problem is a corruption of your toolbar customisation file. Locate all files with extension .xlb and rename the extension(s) to something like .old - no change.

I don't know what is broken, but it appears that I have turned off the 'switch' that automatically opens personal.xls and allows macros to be run from the toolbar.

I think the next step might be to reinstall excel but i'm hoping to avoid that step.

    Thanks again

    Other hunch:

Tools, options, general, uncheck "Ignore other applications"

Do you have full access to the directorie XLSTART and WINDOWS (or others where the xlb files live?)
Is there some network setting that forces certain settings on your Office setup?

    Re: personal.xls (2002 (10.2614.3311))

No luck. It was already unchecked.

This is a stand alone machine and I have full access to all files. Unfortunatley, this also means that whatever has gone wrong was probably my fault. Based on the fact that everything used to work, I'm convinced that whatever went wrong happened when i had opened multiple instances of Excel and was closing them in a bit of a hurry. There were dialogue boxes relating to personal.xls and I'm now wondering whether one of those boxes was different to what I was expecting. I have checked security settings etc., and everything seems ok. I'm almost convinced that I have switched off some obscure option and now can't trun it back on.

    Thanks Again

    This is *very* strange.

What happens if you open Excel WHILE HOLDING DOWN THE SHIFT key? Is personal.xls there (after OKing maybe some warnings)?

If so, a macro in personal.xls is fooling you. Look in the workbook_open event and for a sub called Auto_Open.

    Re: personal.xls (2002 (10.2614.3311))

I moved personal.xls out of xlstart and tried starting with the shift key depressed. I got 3 messages regarding addins (Cannot open Microsoft Excel Add-In for editing. Please edit the source document instead). No sign of personal.xls (the window|unhide option is dimmed). I then recorded a macro, and was able to choose personal .xls to store the macro and the personal.xls file was re-created. I can run the macro from Tools|Macro|Macros but can't assign the macro to a tool bar button. When I close excel, I am prompted to save the changes to Personal.xls but when I relaunch, the Personal.xls file isn't opened and its macros don't appear on the macro list unless I manually open the file.

It seems to me that somehow or other, I have broken a connection between Excel and personal.xls. I really don't want to give up, but believe that it may be simpler to reinstall the software.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions

I guess reinstall is all you have left to try right now.

I am at my wits end. Since your last message, I have tried reinstalling Excel - no change. I then uninstalled Office totally and even went looking for any "Office" files or directories that were left and deleted them. I then did a full install form scratch and the problem is still there.

I assume this was XL 2002? What menu was it, the VBE or the main Excel menu?
