Display of Grouping Levels on Report (2000)

I am trying to create a simple report from a single table. The table contains zip codes(Zip), Congressional Districts (CD), Senate Districts (SD), and House Districts (HD). I created the report using the wizard. I asked for grouping levels on Zip, CD and SD, and sorting by HD (in that order). I used a block layout (I used the wizard for the report because I have not figured out how to create a block layout manually).

The Zip field behaves as I expected it to. It shows just once, even if there are multiple CD, SD, or HD entries for that zip. And on the first entry, as I expected, the CD, SD, and HD columns appear in a neat line just to the right of the Zip, with the CD and SD entries grouped so a single value shows only once.
    Here is the problem:
I want the CD to show under each zip, and to show just once, even if there are multiple SD and/or HD entries for the CD. It works fine for the first zip, but then the CD does not show at all again until it gets to a zip with a DIFFERENT CD. Same with the SD. It does not show next to CDs having the same SD as the previous CD. I want the CD to show - and to show just once - for EACH zip. And the same for the SD under each CD.

I have hunted around in the properties for the group headers, and experimented with a few things in the sorting and grouping dialog box, but haven't found a solution yet. Any suggestions? Thank you,
    -cynthia

Re: Display of Grouping Levels on Report (2000)

The wizard created group headers for Zip, CD and SD with zero height, and put the text boxes for these fields in the Detail section with the Hide Duplicates property set to true.
Try setting the height of the group headers for Zip and CD to a small positive number - something like .03" should be enough, but you can make it larger if you like. Keep the height of the group header for SD at zero.

Re: Display of Grouping Levels on Report (2000)

Thank you. I think I've got it.
I had one problem. When I set the height of the group headers for Zip and CD to .0007" and left the SD header at 0", everything did what I wanted except:
IF a zip had more than one CD, then the zip reappeared once in front of each CD. This did NOT happen for a CD with more than one SD. I changed the height of the CD header back to 0" (still leaving the SD header height at 0"), and now it appears to be working as it should (I don't understand it - I expected that action might cause the CD to malfunction again, but apparently not so!)

Thanks also for the explanation of what the wizard was doing. It was the "hide duplicates" property of the data field that I had not figured out in my explorations.

    Thanks again,
    -cynthia
