    Tables - Format Numbers in Cells (2000/3)

    This is my first message, please excuse me if I'm sending this to the wrong list. I created a MS Word table. Within this table I'd like to format certain cells so that the number will appear with thousands formatting (e.g., "123456789" to view as "123, 456, 789") without having to manually insert the commas. How might I accomplish this, or is Word still unable to do this in Word 2000.

    Hi Teri:
    I'm afraid not. Word doesn't format cells like Excel, so you can't do this directly. You can specifiy a picture switch for a field. Therefore, If you have the numbers in another location & bookmark each, you can then use a REF field with the proper formatting.

    e.g. if you have bmka = 13164 & bmkb = 4646464,
    you can use the following fields:
    { ref bmkb # #,###,### }
    { ref bmkb # #,###,### }

    The other thing you could do is to insert an Excel spreadsheet. Although, I mention these ideas, I realize that it doesn't do what you want, which is to save time in entering numbers.
    Cheers,

    Hi Phil,

    Perhaps a simpler solution would be to put the number directly into a field, preceded by and equal sign (=) and followed by the picture switch # #,#
    {=1000000 # #,#} displays as 1,000,000

    Cheers

    Hi Macropod:
    Yes, I like your suggestion better. <img src=/S/bravo.gif border=0 alt=bravo width=16 height=30> The formula field isn't that much more difficult than entering the number itself. Even {=1000000 # #, } works.
