Winamp 3.0 Free with Good Components

After 3 years, Winamp 3.0 is out of Beta and has some cool components. It has video now, will catalogue and search your MP3's, and a number of plug ins and tweaks with a good selection of stations. One feature I like is that in differrent categories, you play the music with a click instead of having to register and log into the sites in different music categories as is the case with a lot of the WMP 8 or 9 stations.
And Winamp 3.0 and its features are free. They have also made the player easier to manage with degrees of opaquability or is it opaqueness and it minimizes with a click.

    Hi Defrag:
I used to use Winamp, but found it hard to see. How do you like it compared to Media Player?

    Phil--
I found the features to do simple things on the player a scanvenger hunt before, but I think they responded to criticism and have made it easier to see overall as well as the features. Their site walks through the new player. I just downloaded it this morning, so I haven't had a chance to take it head to head with WMP9 yet feature by feature and check all its new features or use it's video.

I do like its ease of radio station use better than WMP's though, (I have always found Winamp's radio stations in different categories easier and quicker to use than WMP and that they have always had better choices without having to log in or register near as much). It seems bug free and increases your choices for internet music stations.

WMP9 seems to have clearly smoother video streaming than WMP8 did, and that's one of the improvements that is showcased--it's a sharper picture on the same video card for me. I'll get back to you when I learn its new features better vs. WMP9. I have my CD's in the WMP format, and I use the lowest possible audio quality with the slider nearly all the way to the left with high compression nearly all the way to the left with high compression (28MB per CD), and I think it sounds just great with my speakers--others might opt for more space and less compression. Also it couldn't be easier to rip and retrieve CD's with WMP--but all the players are about the same in this. I haven't tried Music Match Jukebox Delux-- a lot of people like its features.

This is off-point to your question, but that doesn't stop me. If you like classical of course there are a lot of good sites, but WQXR/The NY Times Station is good and has a convenient 24 hour playlist with links to the music, the composer, and
    the performer on its schedule.

Re: Winamp 3.0 Free with Good Components

One problem I found in the WinAmp 3.0 beta was handling of large collections in the Media Library. I've got a 250 CD collection on a 40 GB hard drive, and I've yet to find a "Media Library" component in any player that can handle it. Other than that, WinAmp is stil pretty good. But since WMP integrated WowThing (SRS Labs digit sound enhancment), I've been using in.

Some WinAmp skins helped usability, but it is still quirky.

Re: Winamp 3.0 Free with Good Components

I've encountered the same problem. My My Music folder has 3,570 mp3 files. When I led Creative's PlayCenter to the music file, it locked up tighter than...you know what. Windows Media Player eventually loaded each tune into the library but it runs very sluggish. And WinAmp just fizzled completely.

The only player that I've found that can handle the large library is MusicMatch 7.2. The sound quality is awful and the built-in equalizer isn't worth a dime but it will slice through the library like a hot knife through butter!

I've thought about splitting the library into multiple directories (by genre) so that I could enjoy the sound quality of Media Player or WinAmp but I shouldn't have to do this.

Re: Winamp 3.0 Free with Good Components

I don't know if this is real yet, and I want to do some more "identical condition" comparisons, but it seems that simply playing internet radio with Winamp is considerably less CPU intensive than with WMP9--not sure about other players and I also want to compare playing ripped CD's. For some reason it seems to use a fraction of CPU clock time compared with WMP9 or just playing from the NYT Radio playlist.

Re: Winamp 3.0 Free with Good Components

I don't use all the features in WinAmp. I just play music. My favorite thing about this new version is how it fades one song into the next. That is just too cool for words. I've given up on WMP because the smeggin' thing is just too clunky looking. Maybe the teenyboppers and slackers are into the fancy interfaces and visualizations, but me, I just want controls to enable me to manage my music.

Speaking of visualizations, has anyone really found them to work? I mean, ya, colors move around and they sometimes do so to the beat of the music if it's strong enough, but so what? Anyway, I want to listen to the music, not look at it fercryinoutloud. <img src=/S/brainwash.gif border=0 alt=brainwash width=15 height=15>

    Ricky--
I'm going to get Music Match 7.2 if for no other reason than so many people rave about it's organizational abilities-- including the guys from Tech TV who love WinAmp's features--and I just want to compare it. There must be a successful way to organize the large number of MP3's you all are wanting to handle somewhere on the web without compromising sound quality so much. Please let me know how splitting by genre works if you do this--and you're right--you shoudn't have to.
