    AutoText List Isn't (Word 97SR2)

Here's another perplexing autotext related problem. The screen shot below shows
what is supposed to be -- but I'm not the expert here -- the list of autotext entries
with the associated style: "P-Spell Outs".

However, the "entries" displayed are actually menu items from a custom drop down
    menu. How's that????

If I take the logic at face value, then the style name "P-Spell Outs" has been applied
to custom commandbar controls. That is outstandingly bizzare. The same problem
exists for all the styles displayed on this autotext list.

At the very least I'd like to clean up the Insert>Autotext list so that no styles
    appear. Help?

    Kevin,

OK - here goes - what you are actually seeing is a list of autotext entries that have been created under that style "P-Spell Outs".

What happens is that every time you create an autotext entry Word automatically displays this autotext entry under the stype that you created it in - if you go and have a look at Tools - Autocorrect - Autotext - you can clear out your entries there.

You can also edit your Autotext entries and the associated style of the entry here (I think!).

Hope this is of some help!

Re: AutoText List Isn't (Word 97SR2)

    Trish,
    Thanks for responding, but...

no, what I'm seeing is NOT a list of autotext entries created under the style "P-Spell Outs".

Like I said, the list displayed under the "P-Spell Outs" pop up menu is a list of custom
menu items -- completely unrelated to autotext entries and styles. It's very strange.

I'm well aware of how Word is supposed to work -- just like you indicate. But that's
    not what's going on.

So what happens when you try to add this supposed "autotext" entry to your document?

That's actually a very good question. What's your guess?

Select the text below to see if your guess is correct.

    <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #000000; font-weight: bold"><font color=yellow>The menu item executes!</font color=yellow></span hi>

Re: AutoText List Isn't (Word 97SR2)

    Hi Kevin:
If you press Alt+Ctrl+NumPad Plus & then select one of your "autotext" entries, does it give the command name? When I do it, it enters the autotext. In any event, you should be able to remove the menu items (1 at a time) by pressing Alt+Ctrl+Minus (above P) & then clicking the "autotext entry/macro" item on the menu. Something is very strange...as you obviously realize. Could there be something in your code that loads the autotext (assuming this may be related to your other autotext post) that also loads menu items? Could you or someone else have added the items? Do you have a style, in either normal or in any global template, that has "P-Spell Out" for a style?

I'm not sure these questions will lead to an answer, but maybe it would give you a better idea of what was happening.

    Phil,
You are a reliably good thinker. I set out to put your insights to the test.

When I enter Delete Menu Item Mode ▬

...and click on one of these rogue "autotext names" (which is really a menu item name),
Word executes the menu item, the OnAction property of which is set to a Sub. It execute
the sub just as it does if the "real" menu item were clicked.

But here's a bit more evidence for the file: if I change the underlying style to "P-Spell Outs"
then Insert>Autotext, the correct list of autotext entries appear in the list and they deploy
as expected. When I put the underlying style back to Normal, we're back to bizarre.

Re: AutoText List Isn't (Word 97SR2)

    Hi Kevin:
That is definitely weird. I would have thought that you could delete these menu items after the cursor changed to a thick minus. I've never seen an exception to that before (although nothing should really surprise me about Word).

Could there be a conflict between different templates? If you load a different normal template, does the bizzare behavior go away? This is really puzzling.

More data: if I start Word without addins (/a), the Insert>Autotext list is fine.

    It's in somebody's code....humm... I wonder who....I gonna look around
and see if any of the programmers around here are up to something.

As a total sidebar here, this Kevin asked the other Kevin if dragging over the highlighted text (revealing it) could also be done in Word as was done here with HTML...anyone have a clue/suggestion? He didn't seem to know how nor do I -- other than in HTML as it's done in his post.

    Hi Kevin:
I don't know about HTML, but you can set a background, either for the page or a paragraph, & then choose a font color that will only show up when you highlight it. In other Words, change the font from automatic to the same as the background color.
    Cheers,

Re: AutoText List Isn't (Word 97SR2)

That's what I did (seemed obvious), but doesn't seem to really work very well...certainly not as clean as it did with the HTML. In fact, I used a red font and red shading on the text and then selected the text and still didn't see anything. Yellow on yellow in Word barely shows the text when selected. Not a big deal, just thought it would have been nice to do this as "cleanly" as the HTML shows it.

    Hi Kevin:
Yea, it doesn't work very well. You can format the font as black & the shading as 80% gray. The text won't be seen until you highlight it, but it's not very practical.

Re: AutoText List Isn't (Word 97SR2)

I think I need a bit more info on just exactly what it is the produces the list of autotext.

I thought that autotext entries in the Insert>Autotext list are grouped according to the style
applied to the entries when they were created. Indeed, that appears to be the case
    for autotext entries I create.

However, the default Insert>Autotext list contains 10 groups (Attention Line, Closing, etc.)
But I cannot find any styles named Attention Line, Closing, etc. How come?

More detective work reveals that the Insert>Autotext menu contains 3 controls:

    1) Autotext, caption = "&Autotext"
    2) New, caption = "&New"
    3) the autotext list, caption = "&(List of AutoText Entries)"

The ampersand is, of course, the accelerator key indicator. "A" for Autotext,
"N" for New. But for #3, the accelerator is "(" ???? I don't think so.

For the sake of completeness, good ol' #3 has a commandbar ID of 3260 and is
Type 1 (msoControlButton). Using FindControl to execute that item does absolutely
    nothing.

I wonder if that menu item (commandbar control) actually is or references something
    like an AUTOTEXTLIST field? Oy.

Re: AutoText List Isn't (Word 97SR2)

Have I discovered hidden styles or does everybody already know about this?

Insert an AUTOTEXTLIST field in a document, name it "Attention" or whatever
you like, but assign it the style "Attention Line" (s "Attention Line")

Right click that field. What pops up?

What do you know about hidden styles??
