    Reformatting RW CD (XP Home)

    Hi

I was copying a very large file to a RW CD, ran out of disk space, everything froze, and I had to turn the PC off to regain control.

I have Win XP Pro with SP1. I hope my solution works for you.

Insert the CD-RW that you want to re-format. In Windows Explorer highlight the drive letter. Click on the File menu. On my computer I see "Erase this CD" as the second option. This will achieve the same result as re-formatting- ie empty the CD.

BTW, I tried to delete a file on a CD-RW. This gave me an error message because the file was "read only". The error message also stated that writing files to a partially-full CD-RW will result in existing files being over-written with files that have the same name. I have never tried it.

Re: Reformatting RW CD (XP Home)

    Hi John

If I do what you suggest with my faulty CD, the option "Erase this CD" doesn't appear. (If I do it with a non-faulty CD, it does appear.)

My guess is that "Erase" means erase, and that XP doesn't have a format function for CDs.

    Thanks for your suggestion, John
