Show Full Menus (Windows XP, IE 6.0)

When I click Favorites on the menu bar, it doesn't immediately show the full menu. Where is the setting for this?

In most office apps, you have the ability to click on Tools | Customize... | Options and can then check the box: Always Show Full Menus. That sequence is not available on IE.

It is not a matter of desktop space - there is plenty of room to display the full menu of twenty items. Also, as far as I can tell, it's just happening on the Favorites menu item, the other menu items seem complete. I don't remember this being a problem just a few short weeks ago. And I don't know what has changed the behavior of the program.

Well, I thought it fixed the problem. But after a reboot, the unexpanded menu is showing up again. What else can I do? I'm at a loss...

I think you want to de-select it.
(Or are you saying it is re-selecting itself after a re-boot?)

Maybe we should post this in Puzzles:
Just what are "Personalized Menus"?

It is puzzling why MS didn't maintain consistemcy amongst the applications. Enabling full menus is very straightforward in Word, Excel, etc., but is rather cryptic in IE.

Sorry to butt in, BUT... On my system, the mysterious auto-personalized menus keeps turning itself back on. It is as if the Accessibility Wizard has turned evil and turns ON personalized menus no matter what I select or deselect. This is for ALL Office programs, inlcuding IE. How can I stop this?

Hi Eric:
What happens if you go into, say, Word and,
1. Right click & toolbar & choose Customize...
2. Options tab
3. Deselect personalized menus.

Does that make them go away?

Yes. Then exit the program and come back into the program -- stupid personalized menus are back. Reboot and all personalized menus are back.

Re: Show Full Menus (Windows XP, IE 6.0)

Hi Eric:

First of all, are you on a network? If so, your administrator may be resetting everything & not allowing you the right to modify it. If not, let's try one other thing.

I'm not familiar with XP, but try this:
1. Search for "word.pip" (no quotes). There should be two of them.
2. With Word closed, delete the larger, more recent, one. In Win 98, it's found at

C:WINDOWSApplication DataMicrosoftOfficeWord.pip

3. Then restart Word & repeat the steps from my last post. Close Word & see if that works.

4. If it doesn't, search for a delete both word.pip files. This will invoke repair, so make sure that you have your CDs handy. After that, repeat the steps in my other post.

The personalized menu settings are kept in the word.pip file. In Win 98, the default settings are kept in

C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeWORD.PIP

This applies to Office 2000 & while the files may be somewhere else in Windows XP, they should perform the same function.

See this KB article &this KB article.

Hope this helps.

Re: Show Full Menus (Windows XP, IE 6.0)

I'm hesitant to say it is fixed, but it looks promising... I am NOT on a network. This is a stand-alone. I did the .PIP delete trick. No fix.

The apparent fix was a manual edit of the registry. I went to:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice9.0CommonT oolbars]

and added

a DWORD key "AdaptiveMenus"=0

I think something was seriously messed up, because I couldn't manually do this...I had to reboot clean and merge the .REG file before any programs loaded. Attached is a TXT file that can be renamed to a REG file to do this.
