    anti-virus (Home)

After a major crash, I had to wipe out my hard drive and have started to reinstall everything. I took the opportunity to upgrade to XP. My next dilemma: reinstalling anti-virus software. Any suggestions on which one works best with XP?

I hope you realise that this question is likely to start a riot. People seem to have very strong feelings both for and against every Anti Virus product in the market.

Further to Stuart's sound advice - any major AV package will work well. Just keep your definitions updated, or there is no point in having the software.

Many people like AVG because it is <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>, but evaluate and make sure you like whatever you choose.

Ouch, it's like having your picture on the wall of the post office! As Stuart and Mark have said (and the example posts confirm) there's lots of good AV programs out there - prominent among them are Norton and McAfee. I checked a couple of days ago and the FREEBIE (AVG) still doesn't support virus checking in NETSCAPE email, so you need to be aware of that. Good luck in deciding.

    Stuart,
I really got a good laugh when I read the first sentence of your reply. It was almost the EXACT reaction I got when I read the post from hrwonk. It's kind of like a discussion of religion and politics. Watch out!

Long ago, there was a time when men cursed and beat on the ground with sticks. It was called witchcraft.
    Today it is called golf!
