    Hiding spelling and grammar errors (Word 2000)

    My documents tend to come up with grammar errors (as Microsoft sees them at any rate) highlighted with the wavy green underline, but not spelling errors with the red underline. I like to work the other way round, that is to see spelling errors, and hide grammatical errors. So I opened my Normal.dot for editing, changed the spelling and grammar options to show spelling errors and hide grammatical ones, saved, and restarted Word.

    It was back how it had been, hiding spelling errors and showing grammatical ones.

    Yes there is more than one Normal.dot on the PC, as we have several users each with their own profile, but I know I am opening and editing the right one, because I tried typing "Ian's normal.dot" as a title and that then comes up in a new document.

    So what else do I have to do to get the spelling and grammar options to my taste?

    AFAIK, the settings for spelling and grammar checking are stored in the Windows Registry (in the Settings value under the HKEY_CURRENT_USERMicrosoftOffice9.0WordDate key), not in Normal.dot.
    If you are on a network, your network administrator may have installed a policy that resets this value to a company standard. In that case, you might put an AutoExec macro in your Normal.dot:

    Sub AutoExec()
    With Options
    .CheckSpellingAsYouType = True
    .CheckGrammarAsYouType = False
    End With
    End Sub

    This will execute automatically when you start Word.

    I'm not on a network, just a stand-alone PC at home. I've tried looking at the Registry keys, but there doesn't seem to be one that is setting that default, as far as I can see.

    The Data registry key has two values (Settings and Toolbars) that store a lot of Word settings, but you can't interpret them easily because they are binary values. See What exactly does the Data Key in the Registry store? for more information.

    This key is prone to corruption; I have been able to solve problems with Word several times by deleting it. See <!post=this post by Phil Rabichow, 148410>this post by Phil Rabichow<!/post> for a way to do this without losing all your settings.

    If you don't want to fiddle with the registry, the macro I posted in my previous reply should work on a standalone PC as well as on a networked PC.
