    'HELP' slow in responding (W2000 sp3, O2000 sr-1)

<img src=/S/bummer.gif border=0 alt=bummer width=15 height=15> When trying to use 'HELP' in any app. (Word, Outlook, etc.), the first time I click on 'HELP' the cursor goes to 'busy', stays that way for maybe 20 seconds, then goes back to 'normal' without opening a help dialogue box (Search, Index, ...). The second time I click on it, it waits again, but eventually opens up the 'help' box. Tried re-installing Office with all options set to 'run from computer' or 'install on first use' but that didn't help. I'm up to date on all Windows and Office fixes, have IE 6. Just can't seem to get a handle on it. Used to work fine, and I tried removing added apps with no success. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks much!

Me, too, although it opens reasonably promptly on the second go. I never found a fix. I run IE 5.5 SP2. I think it could be one of the HTML pieces, but I haven't gone digging around to figure out how to repair them.

    Re: 'HELP' slow in responding (W2000 sp3, O2000 sr-1)

I have Win98SE. When I first installed O2K, help was extremely fast. I think 2 things slowed it down for me. One was one of the Office patches. I'm not sure which one, but OFF2000: Update Available for Office 2000 UA Control Vulnerability (Q262767) mentions correctly that installing this security patch switches off the "Show me" popup screens in all Off2k Help files, including the Glossary in MS Project. By removing manually ouactrl.ocx I got the Glossary functionality in all Off2k and it seemed to speed things up a bit. It could be my imagination and, of course, I'm chancing that the vulnerability won't be exploited.

Another thing that slowed it down was when I resized the help screen. Now it comes up quickly as a blank white square, then takes a some time to resize (enlarge) & for the text to show. Since I prefer the larger help screen, I haven't tried to reset it.

Sorry, I don't have a solution to your query, but I notice your environment is "W2000 sp3, O2000 sr-1". What is "sp3"? I've seen references to sp3 for O2K (or W2K) but can't find anything on it at MS. (See <post#=196247>post 196247</post#> )

    Paul,

Did that link give you a site to download SP3? I tried checking myself but backed out when MS wanted more info on me plus it appeared I had to list a company name.

    Thanks

    Hi hlewton,

No, this site just announces an upcoming webcast. I quote:

Support WebCast: Microsoft Office 2000: Deploying Service Pack 3
    Tuesday, November 19, 2002: 8:00 A.M. Pacific time (Greenwich mean time - 8 hours)

    Level:300

During this Support WebCast, you will learn about the various ways that you can deploy Microsoft Office 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) in an enterprise computing environment. You will find out how to use Ohotfix9.exe to chain client-side patch deployment and administrative patching. Because SP3 is a new baseline for Office 2000, you will also hear how this will affect the rollout of Office 2000 in an environment where previous versions of Office 2000 have been deployed. You will learn how to provide additional failover resiliency for client-side patches and how to use some of the new tools that are available on the Microsoft Office Resource Kit site to manage patches in your environment.
    Regards,
    PaulB

    Paul,

Thanks. I'm glad I didn't give MS more information than they already have.
