    defrag

Something happened in defrag. and it will not defrag all the way through. It only goes about 50% and stops. I like to defrag at least once a week but cannot like it is. What happened or what can I do to fix this problem?

    Re: defrag

    Hi Maggie:
    1. Reboot.
    2. Ctrl+Alt+Del to End Task on all your applications except Explorer & systray.
    3. Turn off any power management scheme & window saver.
    4. Run a thorough scandisk & see if that helps.
    5. When you start defrag, make sure that you complete Steps 2 & 3 above.

For more details & some additions if that doesn't work, see this article
    Cheers,

    Phil,

That was a great article. I was just wondering, do you think it would do any good to run SFC if after following the article there would still be problems?

    Re: defrag

Absolutely. In fact, it wouldn't hurt to run it first. However, my guess would be that if defrag is running most of the way through, you wouldn't have missing or corrupted files, but one never knows...

Also, there are a couple of other things I would do. First, download the Win ME defrag. I got mine at http://www.lurkhere.com/~nicefiles/index.html. It's much faster & works on Win98. Secondly, I've been using DiskKeeper Lite, a free download that works pretty good. You can get it at
    http://www.execsw.co.uk/html/downloa...er/dk_lite.htm
    or http://www.execsw.co.uk/cgi-bin/service.pl?5727
    or http://demodl.element5.com/50154/DLe...2Xi7_0_414.exe

I can't recall which & had all three listed.
    Cheers,

    Re: defrag

    Hi Phil,
Thanks for the info on trying to fix my problem. I did what you said but my defrag still stops at 50%. I can't imagine whatever happened cause it worked until about a month ago. Thanks again for trying.

    Re: defrag

Have you done a full Scandisk including surface scan? I recommend running it from the DOS prompt before starting Windows.

How much free space have you got left? I think the minimum requirement is usually around 25% of the total HD for consistently satisfactory results. If you are low on free space, is it possible that th defrag is running into a large file which it can't find working space for?

    Re: defrag

    Hi Leif,
I just wanted to let you know and to thank you for your message. I was able to run and complete defrag in the DOS prompt. <img src=/S/bravo.gif border=0 alt=bravo width=16 height=30> I have been so upset about it and now, thanks to you, I can rest easy and again enjoy being on this computer. <img src=/S/compute.gif border=0 alt=compute width=40 height=20> . Thanks again.
