    Home Page Change Problem (6.0.2800)

My Home Page is currently set to Yahoo. I recently tried to change it. I went to the new site, then opened Tools/Options; I pressed Use Current and the Address changed. I then pressed Apply and then OK. I closed IE and then reopened it. Guess what? Yahoo was still listed as my Home Page. Nothing I do seems to let me change the Home Page. Nothing is greyed out. Any ideas about what the problem is and how to fix it?

    Thanks.

One would not usually associate Yahoo with making this sort of HomePage Hijack. Is it really "Yahoo" that is doing this, or did you just use Yahoo as an example?

Thanks, I was aware of that article but I do not meet any of the criteria. Also, I'm trying not to have to reinstall Windows XP. I tried to reinstall IE 6.0 using a regedit I found in a KB, but that didn't help. Any other ideas?

I do not think that the problem is with Yahoo. I think that something was accidentally changed in the Registry. How that happened, I don't know.

Re: Home Page Change Problem (6.0.2800)

I know of only one place that the Start Page (Home Page) is actively stored in the registry:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftInternet ExplorerMain
    "Start Page"=

To get picky, this is mirrored in the HKEY_USER.DEFAULT section of the registry, and there is a normally NON-functional similar entry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. BUT, for any given user, the CURRENT_USER value is the one that is active. (WinNT-XP may use slightly different terminology, but the concept is the same).

One you set this via the Tools | Internet Options | Home page dialog box, this remains the same until something comes along and changes it. If something changes this to Yahoo only after you reboot, then something is running during your boot process that is modifying this registry key.

My point is, that type of aggressive behavior is usually not seen with big name sites such as Yahoo. That type of Home Page Hijacking is usually seen with less well-respected advertising sites.

Here is more information on Home Page Hijacking:

    Start Page Guard

I would think that Yahoo would not practice this type of behavior...

Thanks, I've learned a lot about IE in the registry. Based on your input and the reference to http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/hijacked/, I was able to find out that my popup killer had locked my home page. Once I changed the check off in the popup killer, everything was fine.
