    Computer keeps resetting (xppsp1)

I have a amd 1.4, gforce 2mx400, sb live!, 256 mb stick, xp pro sp1. All has been fine until I replaced my msi board with a new gigabyte dual bios ga7vrxp mother board. The first time I turned it on all was OK. I tried all devices. The next day the machine started up all by itself and kept resetting just after POST and just about before the WHITE bar appearing when windows boots up. Soft off works OK but turn it on again and the resetting happens. With the computer off, if the usb plug is removed the computer starts up and then does the resetting thing....what the... any ides PLEASE..... <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

Well, on Windows XP, most of the time the Start & Recovery settings are default set to "automatically restart" when there is a system error -- which, unfortunately, keeps you from seeing just what the system error is, because it reboots instead of throwing the error screen that you can read.

To turn that off, right click on My Computer, go to Properties, then to Advanced, and under Startup & Recovery click Settings, and uncheck the box that says automatic restart. Now -- that will make it so that if your system throws and error, you will at least be able to see what the error is and address it from there.

However, I'm not sure from your post if you are even getting TO the desktop to be able to do that.

Can you boot with the Windows XP CD? You may need to go into the BIOS and tell the system to boot from CD first, but try that - let's find out whether it's a hardware problem or software.

Thanks for the ideas... will re-fit the board this weekend and try stuff... pribb - the boot up does not get to the desktop to try that. Perhaps I have a broken board...? :-(

I am experiencing a similar problem. I have an AMD 1.4, Soyo Dragon M/B, 512MB. ATI All-in-Wonder Radeon 32MB. Tech support instructed me to remove and reseat video board. Sometimes problem goes away and comes back. I replaced the ATI video card with a TNT2 and problem disappeared. Your video card may be suspect, possibly a defective card or incompatible with your your new motherboard or a defective M/B.
