    Maili merge, can't find data source

    We have several merge documents that share the same data source (all main documents and data sources are on a network server). Yesterday, we got a message that "Word can't find its data source" when opening the majority of these files. All files were re-linked with their data source by clicking the "Find Data Source" button and browsing to the appropriate path/filename and saving. Today, the problem is recurring with about half of the files...data source not found.

    Now, we also use DOCS Open and found that users with read access to the files get the "can't find data source" message, but users with full access to the files don't get the error. We use Word 2000, NT 4.0 network.

    Is your data source protected,
    or your main,
    or both?
    What version of Docs are you using?
    Wordin20.dot has a DocsOpen mail merge feature... Is that what you're using to "link" the main with the source?
    Are the data source and main in the same DocsOpen library?

    The documents are not protected.

    Docs version 3.8.2.

    I don't know how the files were linked initially. They were re-linked using the "Find Data Source" option (which appeared when the files were opened and the links were not found) in Word instead of the DOCS Open Mail Merge feature.

    All files are in the same library.

    Since the users with full access do not get the message, it leads me to believe that there is an update of information occurring with the request from the word document to the data source. Users that have read only access wouldn't have rights to update the data.

    Barring any other solution, restore both mains and data to "normal Word documents" using the mail merge wizard and key references in the profile title of your main (data source at XXXXXXX) so the users know which file to select in the next step. Then have them use the Docs Mail Merge feature.

    You may also want to visit Hummingbird's support site (sorry, URL is at work and I'm at home) and see if this is a known bug with Docs' interface.
