    Acct Settings not saved (5)

    Trying to help friend by email. Am in SE Asia with VERY slow connect. Sorry if someone asked this before but search gets timed out... :-(
    OE 5 and Netscape 4.79 both having problem of email acct settings not staying set. Each restart of computer is defaulting to old settings and requires reentry of all acct info. I suspect a registry problem, but wanted some expert advice. Friend is ready to do a full format restore and I hate to see him go to so much trouble as I suspect there is a reason and a fix. Using Win 98 btw

    <img src=/S/hello.gif border=0 alt=hello width=25 height=29> Sounds like your friend is using both MSIE and Netscape mail programs, is this correct? OE is MSIE's email program and version 5 is quite out of date, so is Version 4.7 of Netscape. There have been many patches for both of these, have they been installed? It may be worth considering upgrading to MSIE 6, or even 5.5. Needless to say, make sure all is backed up beforehand. Netscape and MSIE are available on free cd's, which make installation easy, particularly on a slow computer that cannot cope with downloading from the net. Exactly what settings are reverting back to older info? Is the machine being used by only 1 user or is there more than 1 email account set up, if 1 user does he want both Netscape email and OE?

    Thanks for the input. Yes, he is a bit outdated.

    He installed Netscape just to see if it would work when OE would not. Actually he is running a patched 5.5 version of OE but the problems are present in both OE and Netscape so it seems to be more than just an outdated version. We need to get him up and running as he does not have good connection and needs email to work properly.

    The account settings (SMTP/POP authentication, etc) are the ones that don't seem to get saved. I believe he only has one user but does have more than one email account. Since we are only in contact by email I cannot get hands on the keyboard so this is much more difficult to do. [img]/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif[/img] He is also in boonies so access to cd's is not possible any time soon.

    He has since uninstalled Netscape since it did not help. I suspect something is corrupted somewhere, perhaps the registry or identity files.
