    Queries & Relationships (Access 2002)

On an already created mdb, there are 3 tables. The Relationship window shows no relationships. However, when creating a query in design view using 2 of these tables a join line shows up, allowing the query to be created. But, if we try to create the same query using the wizard, it says there is no join/relationship and no query can be created. Appreciate any ideas.

Usually the join line you're describing is between two fields that have the same name. Access assumes these are related. Most of the time they aren't as they are usually the automatic ID field Access will create for you if you select this option when saving a table that has not had a PK assigned. You'll need to delete these joins as they will probably not allow your query to run properly.

Thanks Jerry for your input....makes sense except that the query runs fine in design view but if you try to run it from the query wizard it gives an error and won't let you go on. I think that's the crux of the matter; why do the same fields chosen for a query run ok in design view but not in the wizard. Please, if you get anything further or need the database, let me know. I'd be glad to look at your db. If you have not established any relationships in the relationship view, then Access must be having a hard time trying to define a relationship between the tables when using the query wizard. Sounds like you'll have to create the query just using the QBE grid and set your own relationships. Or, go ahead and predefine the relationships and see if the wizard will perform as expected.

What do you mean, by "if you try to run it form the query wizard"? If the query runs in design view, why are you using the query wizard at all?? <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>
