    Status Bar (6.0 xpsp1)

How can I get the status bar to be vewiable at all times. At the moment I need to select it in view each time I shutdown/startup?

    Thanks,

    Simon

    Re: Status Bar (6.0 xpsp1)

I've had this problem with every version since 5.0 (keeping the status bar visible). It doesn't seem to stick. The best way that I've found is to start IE, turn on the status bar, & hold the Ctrl key down & click the X in the right corner. I've done it with the Shift key also, but I seem to recall the Ctrl key working...at least for awhile. If anyone has a better way, I'd love to hear it. Good luck.

    Hi Simon--
I've had some of the same experience Phil has had through IE 5, 5.5, and 6.0SP1; and still can't figure out if I want the status bar. Currently it sticks. Try this:

Windows Explorer/View/Status Bar. Then while in Windows Explorer, go to Tools/Folder Options/View/Apply to all Folders. Apparently setting it in Windows Explorer will do the trick.

The keyboard shortcut for making the status bar appear or disappear is Alt +V, then B. This keyboard shortcut comes from David Pogue's O'Reilly Missing Manual Windows XP.

Hopefully, it will stick with this done in Explorer. Let us know.

    Simon P. and Phil--
I ran across this VB Script to fix the status bar from Kelly Theriot's great site. This is
Kelly Theriot and Enable Show Status Bar: #67 Right Hand Column will give you a VB script that can hopefully make your status bar stick and function permanantly. Kelly's fixes are solid, and she fixes day in and day out on the 25 MSN XP groups. Don't see any downside to this. Haven't heard from Simon P. if the previous suggestion worked.

Unfortunately none of these fixes seems to offer a permanent cure for this particular XPerience.

Reading between the lines of the relevant KB article 330216 it maybe possible to avoid recurrences. Just refrain from foolishly opening new IE windows via the file menu (or the keyboard shortcut)!

Oh, and there is an official workaround:
<hr>To work around this issue, click Status Bar on the View menu.<hr>
Now that is clever - build in the workaround before you introduce the problem, sorry issue.
