Details View - Another XP Annoyance (XP Pro SP1)

On my NT4.0SP6 system at work, when I open a folder in explorer I see the file icons. If I want to see the contents in a different view, and here's what I like, I can just click on the View icon in the toolbar and the view changes. Click again and it changes again. I can cycle through all the views (large, small, list and details) just by repeatedly clicking on the the View Icon. I like that. In, I think, all other versions of Windows, I have to select my view option from the drop down list in the view menu (or select View and then view option from the menu bar).

Anyone know of a setting or tweak to make that menu behave like NT's?

I have a small down arrow to the right of the "View" icon on my tool bar that gives me this selection. Thi appears the same on ALL of my computers running Windows XP.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Yes, the small down arrow is there too but then you have to move down and select the menu item - not hard by any means, but much easier to just hit the main again, without moving the mouse, until you get the format you are looking for that time. It just seems odd to take features out - like in Outlook 2002 where the contacts list accepts nicknames but if you type in the nickname when addressing a email, OL2k2 will not resolve the address - like it did in ALL previous versions of OL. Another MS blunder.

Sorry Bill, but I for one disagree with you. The so-called "old" way you might have to click several times until the view you want shows up. Now you click the picker and select. Seems smoother to me.

Sure - it is a matter of personal preference - and like I said - it is easy either way - I guess I just prefer to keep my eyes on the folder contents and click a time or two without moving my mouse or eyes. The down arrow works great but I think you have to admit, click, scroll, click is no more convenient and certainly not as quick as click, click, click. Maybe it was just because I am used to it since I use NT at work all day. You should check it out. I suppose it would be like asking a WordPerfect user why he's still using WordPerfect. And my point was, why take features or user options away?
