mouse mevement in XP (Win XP Home)

My new Sony GRX570 laptop came w/ WinXP on it. When I plug in a mouse via USB it doesn't move right. I have to move the mouse a great distance to get it to move the pointer across the screen. Is there some way to make the pointer move a greater distance for each physical movement of the mouse? I've searched the mouse drivers help and TweakXP utilities but can't find anything, (even though I remember a setting for this in some past Windows version I used.) I'm not sure if this is an XP issue or a screen resolution issue, but I'd like to keep the high res screen if possible. I'd be grateful for any suggestions TIA

Have you tried the Mouse settings listed under the Control Panel?
Look for the Pointer Options tab and then play with the "Pointer speed". You will need to INCREASE the speed to get what you want.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Thank you, that helped. I also had to uncheck the 'Enhance Pointer Precision" box. Now it works like it should.
