I never want to see the style Sidebar again! Help! (Windows XP)

    Hi,

I've used Word XP (2002) off and on for a while. The style and formatting sidebar (window or whatever the !@#$!@#$ thing is called) drives me nuts. I prefer mouse-less use and I can't find a way to change the style of a selection of text without using the mouse. Any suggestions would be extremely greatly apreciated.
    Thanks.

In Word XP, you can toggle the 'Task pane' with Alt+V+K, ie, via the View menu.

Display the formatting toolbar (I leave it on all the time). Get to the Style setting with Ctrl+Shift+S, Font with Ctrl+Shift+F, and Size with Ctrl+Shift+P (P for Points).

Help has a list of other useful Keyboard Shortcuts.

I loathe it, too, especially the way it hijacks the Format, Style dialog. You can restore this. Go to Tools, Customise. Select the Commands tab, and choose Format from the Categories list and Style

Tim, thanks for your suggestion. I like both your's and Peter's ideas. They both produce the same style dialog box which I like much better than that Styles and Formatting monstrosity.

I know this post was a long time ago, but I'm just going through some 'old' posts. One thing I've done is renamed some of the styles I use to include abbreviations. For example, heading 1 has been renamed: Heading 1,h1 When I need to apply this style, I press Ctrl + Shift + S (for style), type h1 and then press Enter.

    Hi Diana:
FYI, it may be faster to apply certain styles by using their built-in shortcut keys:
    Alt+Ctrl+1 = Heading 1
    Alt+Ctrl+2 = Heading 2
    Alt+Ctrl+3 = Heading 3
    Alt+Shift+N = normal

You can also change heading styles by using Alt+Shift+right or left arrow.

    Cheers,
