Advanced sort in Excel (Excel xp)

I have a worksheet that COL D has group numbers 1 through 22. COL C has one of 5 different choices, None, Low, Medium, High, or Extra. I need to sory by COL D in ascending order and then within each group have the subgroups None, Low etc. appear.

The final sorted worksheet would have all the group 1's together with them separated into 5 subgroups in the order None, Low, Med, Hi, and Extra. Then group 2's would be next with them divided into Non, Low, Med, Hi and Extra. Then group 3 and so on. I don't know how to deal with the none, low etc. Thank you for the help.

Thank you. I just tried it but it keeps sorting alphabetically and not by the order of my custom list. Why do i sort by COL E and not COL C?

Sorry, that should have been Column C. If you sort on C does it work properly?

This will be a three step process:

1- Select Options from the Tools menu, and then click on the Custom Lists tab. In the "List entries" box type the words None, Low, Medium, High, and Extra pressing Enter between each word not a comma.

2- Select the rows to be sorted if not all rows are to be sorted. Select Sort from the data menu. In the first "Sort by" box select Column C. Click on the "Options" button. Drop down the drop down list labeled "First key sort order". Find the list that you created in step 1 above and click on it. Click on OK twice to complete the sort. The sheet should now be sorted with all the "None" first, all the "Low" second, etc.

3- Again select Sort from the Data menu and this time sort on column D.

The data should now be in the order you want.

It works fine on a sheet I created. Can you post the workbook so I can see what is going on? You can delete other columns that may contain data you don't want anyone else to see.
