    Losing Attachments (OL 2000)

In the last month or so a couple of my e-mail users have had their attachments ditched somewhere over the Bermuda Triangle. Here's the weird part, the first guy it happened to forwarded the e-mail to me and I got it with the attachment, no problem. Then he forwarded to the original recipients and they got it. At first I thought, "Sure, yeah, you just forgot to attach the file originally and you want to blame the e-mail system." But then it happened a few more times to different people and and not only did it appear that they were actually forwarding the original e-mails to me, but when I checked their Sent Items, the original e-mail is there with the attachment. All the users that this has happened to are OL 2000 users. Our e-mail server runs iPlanet on Linux. I have a filter copying all messages in and out to a dummy account. I access these e-mails using Outlook Express on a Windows NT server. The attachments on the original e-mails don't show up in those e-mails either. We also have users using Outlook Express and webmail, this hasn't happened to any of them. Any ideas?

it's one of two things... most likely RTF formatting. Always send using plain text or html. if you check the OE source, you'll probably see a winmail.dat attachment - and the message size will be larger than a message with no attachment is.

second, less possible problem is commonly known as the "pine issue". It's doubtful this is the problem, since it should only affect OL2002 when linux mail users send attachments to OL2002 users. Outlook can't understand the mime header and the message magically appears when you forward it in outlook.

    Thanks very much <img src=/S/clapping.gif border=0 alt=clapping width=19 height=23>

My confusion really came from the fact that at least one of the user's wouldn't have changed to RTF and I know that if he had done it by accident, he wouldn't have known to switch it back before sending to me.

Even though, as you say the "pine issue" is probably unrelated, I would like to find out more about it. Any ideas where I can get more info?
