CD-ROM seeing all as music

oh boy, this is fun . I upgraded an AOpen system from Win 95 to Win 98 last night (Complete reinstall, went from 32MB RAM to 256, changed the modem from 28.8 to 56.6) things were a little quirky at first but being a good tech I worked through all but one. I noticed that when I put in a CD-RW it came up as a music disc and obviously could not be read. I tried a CD-R and the same; yes, I loaded the Roxio driver. It was 11:15PM so I went to bed. Before work this AM I tried a copy of Corel Draw. Guess what the system saw it as a music CD too. The drive is an Acer 24x AKOx. I went to a couple of driver download site without luck. any Ideas?

Fine, don't talk to me! Here is the status. I swapped the CD-ROM with another one I had and BINGO it worked. I have a couple of PC's I am building so I will try it (the offending CD-ROM) in another machine and see what happens.

Sorry we couldn't help Kent, sometimes that odd question will come along and throw everyone for a loop!

But, your reply jarred my mind, (or that tiny marble within) for a moment, and got me thinking about your problem.

Some CDROM devices have proprietary jumpers on the back of the unit itself. I can't recall off the top of my head what these jumpers are for, but these may be having an effect on your CDROM. Another possibility would be some software installed on the machine that is dominating the CDROM drive to read only music, but since your followup unit seems to work, we can pretty much rule that out.

This leads me to believe that the jumpers may be having something to do with it. I might be getting my wires crossed here, but I believe a few of them may be for the drive designation, (e.g. primary, slave) and a few may be for the mode, or configuration of the device. You'll want to do some net sleuthing to figure out what the jumpers, (if there are any) on your device mean, and how you can change them to make the unit work as intended.

I recall a jumper had come off of a box I was working on once, that caused the ROM to read only as Music. Logically, I can see how this might be useful, if you were into mixing music, or othe high-end audio applications, you might have a ROM drive that you'd only want to read Music and no data... take a look at the unit itself, and see if there are any manual configurations you can do to it.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi Kent!

Sorry, I started having a poke around into your Acer AKOx problem, but got side-tracked and never went back. I thought I was on to something when I saw this. Scroll down a couple of screens and it mentions a similar problem. May be worth trying some of the approaches highlighted within.

    BTW, is this you?

WOW!! Great article. When I install the CD-ROM on the system I am building I will run through the information and tips listed.
