File Size Again... (Excel 97-SR2)

I have a 5.91Mb file. No preformance issues, recalcs in under a second. Just looking for ways ro reduce file size, because we have to e-mail it around.

Trying to highlight all worksheets and make a copy in a new workbook result in a Disk Full Error. (It isn't)

Over to Excel 2000 SR1. File Save As works.. Export all worksheets works. The file size stays 5.91Mb. Saving as HTML results in a 28.7Kb file. Now, never having done this before, is that sort of reduction in size usual? When I re-open the HTML file and do a Save As .xls, I'm back to a 5.91Mb file. Interestingly excel complains when you re-open the HTML file that it encountered problems with the conditional formattingin the sheet.

Any thoughts, observations?

Just a general remark:

Applying a format (or conditional format) to an entire row or column is far more (file-size-) efficient than applying it to a largish number of cells.

Could you attach the html version here?

All worksheets are protected, no passwords. Several of the sheets will be hidden in the distribution model.

Dunno what you did to it, but this is what I got...(after a lot of sheets listed as being missing, named Sheet001.htm, Sheet002.htm, .......)

Er thank you but..... Am confused.. Did I send youan empty file? Or have you sent me an empty file? i.e. All cell entries/formatting is now missing. Only thing here is worksheets, but all empty?

BTW: how large is a ZIPped version of your 6 Meg workbook?

Well... the file you sent back to me has no calculations/formulas/data in it. Just the bare worksheet structure?

The xls. version is just under 800K zipped.

It looks as if you only sent the front page of your html file. When you look at the source code it references 12 other sheets.

Hi Folks

Ahhh THUD!.. Told you I had never done this export to HTML thing before....

The file I sent was the file that I thought Excel 2K had exported to HTML, and which it reports as a 28K file.. What I had spotted/realised was the Test_Files directory it creates with the other 10Mb of files in. Doooooh! I had my Excel head on, and not my limited web design head - Well, that's my excuse.

I guess this is just a big model! I need to find other ways of compressing some of my work. Apologies to anyone who has wasted their time trying to open this file.
