    Norton - Shared Folder

    Afternoon -

    (Window98, 2nd edition)
In process of uninstalling Norton AV. Is it safe to uninstall the Shared folder found in CWindowsApplicationDataSymantec? Will this affect other programs? My thanks

If you have other Symantec software installed, yes. If NAV is the only thing you have, then it should be safe - and I emphasize should, because there is no guarantee. But I think the risk is minimal.

    Re: Norton - Shared Folder

Hi Mark, In the past I have had to "uninstall" NAV previous version (ie: when upgrading on 3 recent XP notepads), the instructions for installing NAV 2002 instructed clearly to uninstall the previous version prior to installing the new version. No problems whatsoever occured on any of these machines after doing so. However I discovered (as my own version of NAV 2001 on my 98SE home machine, with renewal only paid to release ongoing updates for 2002, still works very well with all features) but it is due to expire in 15 days. Ive discovered 2002 System Works includes 2002 NAV, what do I need to look for if you feel there is a risk uninstalling my older version of NAV??. I have not used Norton System Works before, and decided not to install it until my existing version of NAV was due to expire......any tips/clues/suggestons????????????

    Re: Norton - Shared Folder

More often than not I've not had to take drastic steps to get SystemWorks or NAV installed. In other words....if the uninstallation program leaves something behind, I don't go and manually get rid of it unless a new installation has problems that require it.

By waiting until the expiry of your current NAV installation, you're extending your subscription period for virus definitions, which is Good Thing. I think you're going to like SystemWorks 2002, it's a very nice, full-featured package, and nearly all of its functionality can be automated. I'd still take the time to manually update your virus definitions, because that way, you know if they're being updated properly. I have seen a few instances of the auto-update silently failiing because someone's subscription ran out.

Last thing I can think of is to see if you can find a nice, fat pipe to the Internet somewhere, or download updates in advance from Symantec's website - there's a plethora of updates for this product when it's cleanly installed.

    Good luck!!

Thanks for the tips Mark, noted and obeyed (see I'm such a good student). Yes I do keep an eye on the updates, being paranoid about virus protection, my old faithful 98SE immediately logs onto the Symantec site as soon as the ISP connects to the net. Not sure about System Works, but Ill give it a try, I should be offline when I uninstall the current NAV right? Then install 2002 SWorks, I guess 2002 will have to reinstall all the updates previously uninstalled on my existing NAV, if that is how it works I will sure be online forever. Either way, I will make sure everything is current, I promise! <img src=/S/cool.gif border=0 alt=cool width=15 height=15>
