Not Recalculating after upgrade to Win2K (2000)

We are using Excel 2000 on a 95 platform. We have started to upgrade to a Win2K platform but have found that some workbooks that are large and have multiple links to many other workbooks are not recalculating. We have tried F9, Tools options ....the only thing that seems to work is to delete the formula and put the link back in. We have many workbooks with thousands of formulae...we cannot rewrite them all.

Any ideas as to why this peculiar thing is happening?

Try saving the workbook to HTML format, opening the HTML file and saving it back as .xls. That should reset the recalc rings.

Will try that. Can I ask a daft question though....What precisely are the recalc rings and what causes this problem?

They are linked lists that XL keeps for each formula to allow it to quickly find all of the cells that need to be recalculated when a cell is changed. It also lets XL find circular references. Each cell has a list of dependants and precedants attached to it.

Your suggestion for saving in HTML and then back works. Thank you very much. I will post this up on our internal website for our thousands of Excel users to see.

One final question. Does anyone know why this happens just because we have changed platforms when we have not upgraded our version of Excel? It takes a while to do this saving and as a firm we are talking about thousands of spreadsheets; which causes us pain.

Legare, this is very interesting stuff. Where did you learn about recalc rings?

Reading Woody and MS Knowledgebase during all the recalc problems a few years ago.
