    What is OSA9.exe

    Hi,
What deos the tiny program (OSA9.exe for Office 2000) Microsoft Office sticks in the startup folder do? Is it safe to get rid of it? Does it consume resources?

    Thanks
    JR

The OSA9.exe file does the following:

    * Initializes Automation

    * Initializes some of the common fonts installed by Office 2000

    * Handles certain commands (New Office Document, Find Fast, Open Office Document, Help, and Screen Saver) on the Start menu and on the Office Shortcut Bar

    * Displays Microsoft Outlook notifications when the Office Assistant is available .

    Re: What is OSA9.exe

    Hi:
John told you what it's for. I'd just add that I disabled Find Fast & took osa9.exe out of startup. It does use resources. After I boot, the first time I load Word, Excel, or Access, it takes about 4 seconds. After that, it loads in just over 1 second. That's without osa. I never noticed any improvement in speed in any Office program when I used it.

    Hi Charlotte,

Thanks, but what's a "Dust Puppy"? Am I missing something here?

The little guy in your picture is Dust Puppy from http://www.userfriendly.org. If you aren't putting me on and just came by the graphic accidentally, tune in and get a few laughs.

    Re: What is OSA9.exe

Ok, Charlotte, I think I understand. I have been having come problems with my Userpic and tried to change it to something else this afternoon. On my screen, however, I still see my old Userpic, not the new one.

Interesting that apparently you can see the new one and I can't.

Where the new one came from I don't know - I found it in a list of graphics somewhere - but it sure looks like your Dust Puppy.

I agree with Phil. I don't think that OSA does anything useful these days - it was probably of value in the olden days when computers were slower and needed all the help they could get.
