Unstoppable chkdsk (xp home / ntfs)

I have a previous posting which touches on a problem with security descriptors, but this one is much more foscused......

Chkdsk runs at every boot without my asking for it, and every time it complains that it "cannot open volume for direct access". I assume that as it does not complete whatever triggers it stays there.

For get fix it, I want stop it!

I just double checked the optional parameters of Chkdsk and I don't see anything that makes it run "persistently." This may be wild, but have you checked the AUTOEXEC.BAT to see if "somehow" the command got in there? I guess it wouldn't hurt to check MSCONFIG as well. If you don't find anything, the next thing I'd try, if it were me, is to go ahead and get to a command prompt (Start, Run, CMD) and run CHKDSK C: /F yourself and see if you CAN get it to complete the cycle on the next boot. Your post reads like the C: drive is NTFS, huh? Does the machine have any other hard drives?

    Thanks for trying!

Been there with msconfig, searched for chkdsk throughout all the tabs to no avail, and I think that includes autoexec.bat doesnt it?

tried forcing chkdsk from the run prompt and it behaves the same way and doesn't clear down the check, Do you know where the chkdsk@boot instruction is held?

No, I've never gone looking. Don't know if you're "experienced" with REGEDIT or not, but if so, you might go take a look in BOTH local machine and current user, down under software, Microsoft, Windows, Current Version. You may already know that the RUN, RUN ONCE, and RUN ONCE EX keys are where such things reside, but I would think you should have seen it when you looked in MSCONFIG. This is a puzzler!

Have you tried starting in safe mode?
