File Already Open (Word 97)

I've come across this before but I can't remember the solution.

I have a client, Joe, using Word 97. Most files he tries to open, he gets the error message that the file is already open by user "Joe" (he's the only Joe in the place). Eventually the file opens, it's just a pain in the neck to do.

What's the cause of this strange behavior?

Thanks,
Craig.

Go to the folder in which this file is located in, and REMOVE ALL temp files. He at the last time it was opened, he did NOT close it correctly, so the temp files are still there and Word thinks it is in use.

Maybe he had no choice -- if Word closes unexpectedly, it doesn't do its "housekeeping" and delete the temp files...

While that's true, I wouldn't think it would be a problem so frequently. If this is happening on most files, I expect it has something to do with how he's closing it. Dave, can I assume that by closing it improperly, you mean he's doing something like using the close box in the upper right-hand corner instead of clicking on the file menu and choosing close? We have the same problem frequently using a document management system.

Hi Lee:
I use the close box all the time without having problems, but I'm not using a document management system. Maybe I should knock on wood.

I have seen many ways in shutting down a program, from hitting the OFF switch to using the "Task Manger". Any of these will or can leave the temp files that make Word think that the file is in use. I do agree that some times even when things are NOT going right, Word will shut down and the file is NOT closed properly.

Phil, you're just a lucky guy. One thing I was told (I don't know for sure that it's true, but it made a certain amount of sense) is that when you use the close box instead of File/Close, sometimes autoclose macros don't run. Now, I have to say that on my home computer, I use the close box all the time and I've never had a problem. But with a DMS, it's a pretty consistent problem. Perhaps in Craig's case - I'm assuming a corporate setting - there could be some autoclose macros that are causing the problem. Just a guess.
