Ruler gives wrong size (word2k sr1)

Trying to understand Text Box dimensioning, I created a
new document and inserted a text box.

Format Text Box - Size 2.5" high 3.5" wide,
    line border 9pts (1/8")
layout 1.2" left of page, 1" below page.
text box internal margins all 0.0"

This proved for me that the border is equally spread on
both sides of the box dimension.

Now, with box selected, Alt click on ruler right magin.
Mine shows 3.38". Change text box width to 3.49, 3.48...
and here is what I get:
    Width Ruler Actual (should be)
    3.45 3.33 3.325
    3.46 3.34 3.335
    3.47 3.35 3.345
    3.48 3.36 3.355
    3.49 3.38 3.365 ** error! ruler should be 3.37!!
    3.50 3.38 3.375
    3.51 3.39 3.385
    3.52 3.40 3.395
    3.53 3.41 3.405

I repeated test several times and wonder why just this one
    width seems to be wrong.

Also, is there any way to do this "Alt right click on
ruler right margin" under VBA control and read back the
value? I wanted to explore more values.

    Thanks, George

    You're worried about rounding errors of 0.01" <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>? You've got very good eyes! Please remember that 1 point = 1/72 inch = 0.014".

Re: Ruler gives wrong size (word2k sr1)

My ancient HPLJ-5L gives 300 dpi and HPDJ-870 gives 600dpi,
and couple this with word zooming to 500% so I figure that word
must be calculating with much better precision than integer points.
    - Thats why the error at width 3.49 seems weird.

I was thinking that the granularity of thin lines and borders interacting
with table and text box formatting would be good to understand.

I don't have Word 2000 handy right now. For what it's worth, Word 97 gives exact values...or at most .01 off. I'll see about testing with Word 2000 later.

Just checked with Word 2000, pretty much the same result. Off by .01 at most. Don't know why we differ. If you create a different normal.dot, do you get the same result?

Re: Ruler gives wrong size (word2k sr1)

So, I deleted Normal.dot, let word2k create a brand new one, and got the identical results.
Then I went to a WordXp system and EGAD! got different screwy numbers.
Again, I am Alt+Left(Temp)Clicking on the Ruler Right Margin box for the Text Box.
All I am doing is changing the TextBox Width using Format TextBox, and
looking at the ruler each time with the Text Box selected so the ruler
shows the dimensions of the Text Box.

(I had formatted these columns with spaces that got eaten by the posting monster)

    TextBox__Ruler__Ruler___Actual (precise dimension)
    Width__Word2k_ WordXp
3.45____3.33____3.32____3.325__(border=0.125" wide and the text box loses half that on each side)
    3.46____3.34____3.33____3.335__i.e. TxBxWidth - Border = Actual
    3.47____3.35____3.34____3.345
    3.48____3.36____3.35____3.355
    3.49____3.38____3.36____3.365__ ** word2k error! ruler should say 3.37!!
    3.50____3.38____3.38____3.375
    3.51____3.39____3.39____3.385
    3.52____3.40____3.40____3.395

Note that Word2k seems to be rounding up EXCEPT for the screwy width=3.49.
and WordXp rounds DOWN below that screwy 3.49 and UP above it????????

I had wondered if this was due to an internal calculation in some dimension related
to Points or Picas, but the new results I get with WordXp seem to make this unlikely.

Please! Someone! What is going on?

Re: Ruler gives wrong size (word2k sr1)

The assumption that the ruler is measuring the text box, I think, is incorrect. It is measuring the margins of the text itself. So even with internal margins set to zero, there seems to be more than one calculation.
    Cheers,
