XP no software can be installed (2600)

Well, its a fun day in the neighborhood.
I built a new PC using the MS HW compatibility list.
Installed XP, it works fine., even sees most all hardware except video card.
Installed MBoard drivers (Gigabyte 7ZXE) system locked up, only choice was reset. This is a complete freeze. The system will go into Safe mode. After the usual HW checkout I had to reinstall including a reformat (could not roll back or repair). Again runs fine with no software. I decided to skip the MBoard drivers and install the new XP video drivers. After reboot, same thing. I was able to remove the drivers via Safe mode. Reboot and everything is fine. Final test, I installed Roxio 5 Basic for the burner, reboot and guess what, lock up.
The lock up occurs at various times. Sometimes the welcome screen is still on, sometimes it gets to the desktop with the hourglass still running and sometimes you can move about for 2 or 3 seconds. I appears to give you less time with each restart.
Again all works in safe mode, but every software program??
I tried to search the knowledge base with no luck (The kt133a article does not apply). My next project is to run the "live" HW compatibility test (if it is still available on the MS web site and I can get on the net) and then run the XP critical updates.
Jaton NVidia MX440 64MB
DLink 10/100 NIC
Via KT133a

Motorola 56k Modem (the Directron $9.95 specail)
AMD Athalon 1.4/266 CPU
512 MB PC133 SD-RAM ( specifically for the chipset)
Mitsumi 3.5 floppy
Samsung 40x12x40 CD-RW
?( I forgot the brand) 80gig ATA100, 7200RPM HDD

Re: XP no software can be installed (2600)

It looks like you must start from square one. First of all, check for BIOS updates (the latest for your motherboard is perhaps v.1.11, but I'm not sure). Then download all newest applicable drivers.
Make sure that your CD-RW drive is connected BEFORE CD-ROM in following order: Primary Master, Primary Slave, Secondary Master, Secondary Slave (it is recommended to connect them to different controllers if you plan to copy disk to disk).
Reformat your hard drive and install WinXP. After installation is finished, open Device Manager and from there install your drivers, rebooting computer after each installation, until all yellow question marks and red Xes will be resolved. Then install drivers that Windows can not detect as problem (video, sound, modem, etc.).
If you encounter problems installing any download driver, establish Internet connection and let Windows search for appropriate driver from Microsoft webpage. If it doesn't work< try another driver (sometimes Windows 2000 drivers also work under XP).
When you finish hardware installation, apply WinXP SP-1 patch.
After rebooting, check Device Manager once again and if everything is OK, create Restore Point.
Only after that you can start installing your software (it is better to start from MS Office).
Good luck.

Re: XP no software can be installed (2600)

Unfortunatly I have the latest BIOS according to the revision numbers. I do plan on installing it again though.
I do not have a CD-ROM only a CD-RW as secondary master (The HDD is primary master)
"After installation is finished, open Device Manager and from there install your drivers, rebooting computer after each installation, until all yellow question marks and red Xes will be resolved. Then install drivers that Windows can not detect as problem (video, sound, modem, etc.).
If you encounter problems installing any download driver"
Actually the only yellow exclamation point is the Video card. It does support 800x600 and 16 million colors so I may leave it as is for now. As for the rest of your statement. I cannot install any other drivers. That is what freezes the entire system.
After I reinstall the BIOS, I will try Windows updates, if the system appears to be stable I will try some non evasive drivers.

As I said, try to connect to Windows Update website and install NVIDIA driver from there (rejecting all other updates). Do not "leave it as it is" with yellow question mark - your driver cannot handle your video memory properly and interferes with your system memory. That's why your system freezes and you can't install almost any program.

If it's the same Nvidia drive I tried out, I had bad experience with it. The reference driver from Nvidia's site is much stabler - for me, anyway.

Status report: Went and removed all Run=, Runonce= yadda yadda and boots fine to XP. Even though I cannot get the modem to work (reinstalling the modem is next) Should I install XP SP1 or just go with updates.

Sorry, I meant the WHQL driver that's available on the Windows Update website. I had a marked difference in performance using that driver, which was 3.0.8.7. I rolled back to 3.0.8.2 from Nvidia's website and haven't had the same problems (screen artifacts primarily).

Re: XP no software can be installed (2600)

Unfortunately 30.82 is the driver I have. At lunch I removed (uninstalled) the modem it showed but would not dial out. Then I could only go into Safe Mode. So... The system is reformating at the house and when I get home I will sulk. You see I am a part time teacher and have about 30 minutes before I go to the college and teach after my 40 hour job. Maybe tomorrow during lunch or night.

ok, now for the conclusion of "The PC that is a pain." I reinstalled. Went to MS updates and installed MS Nvidia driver (.....87) instead of NVidias ...82. Before rebooting I removed the Nvidia file for setting up their extra stuff from the RunOnce in the registry under the LocalMachine. That was it. Everything worked from there.
