    Word/works/mail merge (Word 2000 sr1/ works 6)

Been trying all day, searched, patched, knowledge-based it, system restored, unistalled, reinstalled, read using office 2000 etc and still cant make the following work properley:

Want to create mail-merge mailing labels in word from works database. Both programs work fine independantly. When using wizard the two programs appear to "shake hands" but the merged document contains gobbley-gook... many wierd "y"'s with the correct words interspaced. It's like they are talking foriegn languages and the translator in the middle is drunk!
It used to work fine and now it does not and i don't know why?
This is driving me crazy. Got a newsletter (already overdue) to send before Friday when i go on three weeks holiday.... does MS stand for "misery shared?"
AM using XP home on P4 machine with acres of space...
    Thanks in anticipation.

I beleive it's because you didn't check the Select Method check box in the Open Data Souce Dialog box.

Check it and it should work.

    See the attached screenshot.

    Thanks carbonn!
Sadly it did not help. Tried it both ways even.
I also just put a checkmark in the box in options for "confirm on open" and noticed as a result that the pop-up confirm box does not list the works database extension "*.wdb" which is what the files are???

    I don't know then.

Never having used Works before, the only othe idea, and this is strictly a guess, Word doesn't know how to handle Works 6 files and you may be out of luck??

Like I said, that was just a guess.

In the interest of expediency, you might want to export the records you want from Works to a delimited text file, Excel, or something like that. Then you should be able to run your merge from that document.

    Re: Word/works/mail merge (Word 2000 sr1/ works 6)

Thanks for all the help. I ended up opening each MS Works Database then saving them as *.dbf and then using a different converter to do the job...
Why, when Works includes Word, does word not support works for mail-merge?

I would still be interested to know why it used to work and does not now, if anyone can help me?

I wonder if it is a side effect from the latest MS security patches?

    Thanks again

    Hi David:
By any chance, do you have Word set (under File/Open) to "recover text from any file"? If so, you would probably have had problems with other files though. Just a thought.

    Re: Word/works/mail merge (Word 2000 sr1/ works 6)

This is not the default setting (Recover text from any file) but an option in the open box for "files of type".

I did try merging using this file choice however to open many different file extension types eg *.wdb, *.csv, *dbf.... all produced a list of all the database info where the ONLY deliminator was a paprgraph mark, hence could not seperate the info successfully!

    So thanks for trying anyway

    Hi David:
One more idea that you've probably already thought of. I'm not familiar with Works, but will it allow you to save a file as .rtf? If so, maybe Word will be able to read that.
