    AutoText not giving screen tip

I have 2 users that create AutoText entries using 4 or more characters as the description but they never get the screentip giving them the option to expand it. They always have to hit F3. My first thought was to check make sure the check box for this purpose was checked under AutoText entries and it is appropriately so on both machines. What would be the deal? Is there another setting I've missed?

    Hi Pam:

    Nope. That should do it.

However, it depends on their autotext entries. If you have two autotext closings, "Yours truly" & "Yours forever", you will not get an autocomplete tip after typing "Yours". See

If that doesn't work, I suggest the usual supects. Rename normal.dot--see if the fresh one is better. If not, start word from the command line with winword.exe /a.

    Good luck.

Re: AutoText not giving screen tip

I have the same problem, but none of the suggestions provided work. I am using Win2000 and am trying to replace the text entry "Enter" with a button graphic (also "Execute" and "Back"). When I tried this a few years ago, it worked. I'm about ready to pull out my hair trying to figure out why it's not working now. Mind you, ordinary text works OK (both the supplied AutoText and those I have created).

    Any suggestions? Anyone? <img src=/S/crazy.gif border=0 alt=crazy width=15 height=15>

    Hi Jezsik,

You can stop pulling out your hair. If the image is floating then it requires the full AutoText name followed by <F3>. (Or insert via the AutoText toolbar/menu)

For inline images you can use the first 4 characters (unique to all AutoText entries) and the AutoComplete tip should display.

Looks like I'm going to have to go with a crew-cut for now, that tip flag is STILL not appearing. However, if I type the first three or four characters and press F3, my graphic appears! So, i'll just write it off as another of Word's weirdnesses. <img src=/S/frown.gif border=0 alt=frown width=15 height=15>
