No menu, no toolbars?!! (Office 98 (I think))

(Man, go away for six months and suddenly there's over a thousand new threads!) <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15>

The short version : She opens Word but there are no toolbars and no menu. There's no where to right click and bring 'em back. Standard shortcuts like Ctl+n work fine, but not Alt+f+n. How do we get them back?

The long version : My friend phones me and describes her room-mate's problem. She has no idea how the toolbars and the menu have vanished. Below the application title bar, the document begins. Scroll bars are in place and she can still switch between the various views (Normal, Outline, ect). I had her open more documents and do anything I could think of. I even had her drop some Excel cells into the file. That was almost successful as when she clicked the cells in word, the toolbars popped up. Unfortunately, they were Excel toolbars and the moment she clicked elswhere, she was back to the same problem. I tried to recreate the situation by hiding all my toolbars, but the menu just won't go away. I can't figure out how the heck she did this. Any suggestions?

She could try Start/Run... (that is, click the Windows Start menu, select the Run... option), and type
    winword.exe /a
(there must be a space between exe and /a)

Note: Office 98 is for the Mac. If she's using a Mac, the above doesn't apply.

In the event that using winword.exe /a doesn't work, she should replace her Data key in the registry. See <post#=148410>post 148410</post#> for an explanation how.

And don't forget to rename (or delete) the normal.dot file (any and all).
