    Obscure Setting(s)? (WinXP Pro SP1)

In other boards recently, I've discussed and not solved a few irregularities in my XP Pro installation which has been in place since the first of the year. The next time I run a full system drive image, I'm planning to do a fresh, clean install to see if I can clean up some of these weird happenings. But, I thought I would throw a couple of these out to see if ANYONE can think of some obscure setting in XP that could be causing any or all of this stuff!

I use Mozilla 1.1 for email and have since they went "formal" with version 1.0 but am unable to PASTE an image from the clipboard into an email as I compose it. Text from the clipboard works just fine, just NOT graphics of any kind. I thought this was a glitch in Mozilla until recently when I got an email from KenK, also a Mozilla user, with a pasted in graphic that he placed into the message from the Windows clipboard. I've tried creating a new Mozilla profile from scratch, without success and even logged on with my built-in Administrator account and did the same thing. Which leads me to the conclusion that it's somewhere in a GLOBAL Windows setting.

Another example is the "View Post Number" button in The Lounge at the bottom of each board you view. I can't get it to work either in IE 6 SP1 or in Mozilla, yet it works for everyone else. I have recently done several new machines at KET (where I work) and the View Post button ALWAYS works on all of those machines. I've even tried it on my older Win98 and WinME machines in IE of older vintage and it also works. Again, leading me to the conclusion that I have an XP settings problem.

I've tried running WITHOUT any of the TSRs that normally run on my system, without success, so I don't think it's a software conflict. If anyone has a single clue, I'd love to try it before I do a complete re-install for such a nit of a reason! Thanks for your "listening" patience.

    Big Al:

I don't have a solution but I did try "View Post Number" with Netscape 7. Didn't work for me either, but the "Jump" button to the right of it works OK. I'll try pasting a graphic into the NS7 email client to see if there is a problem there too.

    Cheers,

" use Mozilla 1.1 for email and have since they went "formal" with version 1.0"

Which version are you using and did you remove the older version before installing the latest version? If first of these is a BETA version and then you installed a production release on top of it, may be a problem.

If you are having the same problem with the "View Post" in both viewers, you have some setting that is blocking the function. One thought do you have a Java script engine installed such a the VM from MS?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Big Al:

Some further observations: As stated in my earlier post, "View post number" does not work (for me) in NS7. It does work when I use IE6. I tried pasting a graphic into the NS7 email client with no success. I typically use "attach" or "insert" to do this so I don't know if this behavior is unusual or not.

I've noticed a number of unusual behaviors in NS7 (especially its email client) compared to NS4. How convinced are you that this is an XP problem and not a Mozilla issue?

No Dave, I followed the instructions from the Mozilla folks each time and installed each version in its own directory after uninstalling the previous, even with the "production" versions. On your other question, I don't know what Java I have installed. The attached screenshot may help identify it, but I wouldn't think that would get in the way of anything.

What's so puzzling is that it doesn't work for me in EITHER Mozilla or IE 6 SP1..

I'm not convinced in any direction, Paul - I'm just confused.

    Al,
I think you have the Sun Version and NOT the Microsoft VM version.

Al, The 'View Post Number' button is greyed out on my XPP SP-1 machine. I only use IE. I do have the Sun JVM installed. I can still enter a post number in the box. Then the button becomes 'pushable'.

Re: Obscure Setting(s)? (WinXP Pro SP1)

Well, that at least makes me think it's NOT a problem associated with the JVM. But yes, Joe, we have the same level XP Pro SP1 and in IE I can't "push" the button like everyone else, let alone in Mozilla. I've looked and looked through my "Internet Options" settings screens and even tried changing a thing or two (always careful to put it back later) but can't get the sucker to work. This is what makes me think it must be some obscure XP setting I've monkeyed with, like in Policy Editor or something, somewhere.

I had it in my head that it might be one of the XP PowerToys but I don't actively run any that I know of EXCEPT that pesky little thing that prettys up the ALT-TAB function. I've turned it OFF in MSCONFIG and that doesn't help.

Al, You might try the most recent Sun JVM. I think it is 1.4.1.

1] When you enter a number into the post number field, does the button change from disabled to enabled as below?

2] If it does become enabled, does it depress when you left-mouse-click it?

3] Does the Jump to Forum button on the bottom right function OK?

4] Does the hyperlink in (e.g.) "Post: 193540 re: 193514 from bigaldoc" work, and does it open in a new window?

    5] Does <post#=193514>post 193514</post#> work?

    Al,

The Java version you have installed does NOT matter.

The button is controled by JavaScript, an entierliy different beast from Java.

<P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by bigaldoc on 01-Nov-02 11:01. )</P>Hallelujah, Joe, you're a wonderment! Java 1.4.1 did the trick on the VIEW POST NUMBER button in IE 6! (Sorry Bryan, I don't know why!) Didn't help it in Mozilla, but given other nuances like Smilies and Click Tags, I can understand how folks can't satisfy all browsers. I'll never understand why, but THAT much is solved. By the way, the updated Java didn't solve the Mozilla-unique question about pasting a graphic from the clipboard into an email. That still doesn't work, so I think I'll un-install Mozilla, wipe out all traces and start again, since it DOES work for Ken.

Thanks for hangin' around me, Joe!

As you can see from my post to Joe, Leif, it's (maybe) moot now. But, links, posts and the jump button have all been working, just the view post button that was failing. Why now, given Bryan's comment, I don't understand witchcraft!

    Jeez, don't appologize AL.

As long as it works. It doesn't make sense to me, but hey...

    It's a MSism that we've all come to know and loath <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
