Insert - attach scanned or photo (Windows98SE-Office 2000 Pro)

Many times I'd like to scan a document and insert it into an email message. The help thing says I have to have a TWAIN.
How do I know if I've got it or how do I get it. I have been scanning and using Microsoft Photo manager to create a file which I then attach to the email message. I tried doing the "insert" thing and it looks great on my machine, but it doesn't send.
How do I send photographs as attachments to email without tying up my telephone line all night?
Are the answers to these questions written down someplace?

MIHS that for a start you should review the size of the inserted/attached picture for, if it is too large it is unlikely to be accepted by your or your receipient's e-mail client. Somewhere in the region of 4Mb may be Ok - but anything in excess may be unsendable...

My email "server" (?) readily takes the attachments I have tried to send.
The question is how do I get the scanned document inserted into the email document so it will stay?
How can I reduce the size of a scanned document or a photograph so it doesn't take an hour or so to send?
How do I know if I have TWAIN? If I don't, where do I get it?

I'm not clear what you mean by it doesn't send, because your response says your server takes it.

You already have twain, or you wouldn't be able to scan. Whether you can scan directly into an email attachment will depend on the twain driver and application. If it won't do this you can always save the image to disk and attach that.

If the item is taking an hour to send and you are using a dial-up connection then the file is pretty big. Good bet it's over 4MB. (I'd be pretty miffed at someone who sent me something like that, but that's another story.) Anyway, you have to reduce the image size, resolution and/or color depth at scan time in order to reduce the size of the file. Some scanning apps have a "scan for web" option that makes this pretty simple. If the one you use doesn't have this you'll have to try different settings.

    Thanks for your helpful answer.
when I try to insert a document from the scanner into the email message, the document appears on my monitor. However,
when I try to send the INSERTED document, the recipient gets a blank page. I know because I have tried sending the document to myself.
I have scanned, saved to a file, and sent. You are right. The files are too big. I have tried to reduce the size in MS Photo Editor and that doesn't work. I was trying to figure out how much to reduce the size of the scanned document in order to send it as an attachment in a reasonable amount of time.

I wish I could be more help on the graphics part, but I've never done much in that area. For the little bit I do, I use the scanner software to set the image size and resolution. I try to get down to 60k when possible.

As for transmittal speed, you can figure on about 10 minutes per megabyte - on average - with a 28.8 connection. A 56k connection won't be twice as fast because it relies on compression to achieve this, and graphics don't yield the ratios that other file types do.
