Cursed personalized menus will not turn off (2000)

In all Microsoft Office programs, my "personalized menus" are stuck on. I turn them off with Tools / Customize and UNselect the "menus show recently used commands first" and UNselect "show full menus after a short delay". After I exit any Office program and then reload that program, the #$%!!! feature has turned itself back on. This also happens when I reboot (all Office programs are reset to this lovely "personalized menus" setting). Yes, I know how to UNselect (you remove the X in that box). This is maddening. I hate this feature and wish to banish this from my system. What registry entries can I nuke? What files can I ax? I have manually and completely tried removing and then reloading Office. No good -- problem is still there. <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>

What version of Windows are you running? I haven't had trouble turning this off on either NT or Windows 2000. The only problem I had was in tracking down all 3 places where you have to turn it off: Office, Internet Explorer and Windows itself!

Re: Cursed personalized menus will not turn off (2000)

I think I used the sledgehammer approach to fix this... I am running XP-home. I did turn off all three places. I think the registry was messed up. I had to create a REG file and merge it before any programs loaded (after a clean reboot). I added to the registry key

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice9.0CommonT oolbars]

    a DWORD "AdaptiveMenus"=0

This seems to have fixed whatever the heck was going on. <shrug> Attached is a TXT file that can be renamed to a REG.
