    Modem auto logging on

Every time I fire up Win98 my modem auto dials out. What could be causing this?

Also does anyone know of some software that I could use to detect and log any unauthorised traffic through my modem. I am certain that something on my PC is transmitting to and from the internet. I have installed Radiate that detects and removes any adware programs, but this only removes specific programs.

    TIA

    Hi Tia,

Usually, when the modem automatically turns on, it means a internet dependent program (ie. AOL AIM, Yahoo messenger) is trying to access its server. If you can find out what app is trying to access the internet, usually you can set it to log on manually and it won't dial. I've also used software to track whether my PC is accessing the internet. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name, but gimme a day or two.

Why don't you get a firewall? That's one of their purposes. One of the best is ZoneAlarm & they still have a FREE version at http://www.zonelabs.com/sitemap.htm

Zonealarm will prevent any trojan software getting onto your machine from the Internet in future. If you think there is something already there, get Norton or MacAfee antivirus and scan the disk. This should detect any nasties that are already there and advise you on how to get rid of them.
