Dial-up connection pop-up

Both Win2k and Win98se have those annoying, random pop-up windows that invite me to connect to the Internet.

What's the best way to get rid of them?

I've tried everything except for what will work.

IE has (or used to have) a default 'automatically check for updates' option.
Might be worth checking your options.

    Re: Dial-up connection pop-up

Under the 'Advanced' tab in Internet Options (from the right-click, Properties procedure) there is a checked box under 'Browsing' that says 'Automatically check for IE updates'

Is this what you're talking about? If so, how would that prevent the dial-up connection pop-up window from occurring at random?

If the above advice hasn't cured your problem :

It might by trojan spyware that is trying to log on. Get hold of AdAware (available on my website) and run it to clean off the well known ones. (But note that software that depends on it may stop working eg. Go!Zilla).

If that still hasn't done the trick, in IE check 'Never Dial a Connection'. Unfortunately, when you want to access the net, you will then have to reactivate it.[/list]

I mean you probably don't want it selected. I recall a version of IE that would dial-up at odd times on a daily basis.

Okay, thanks... it's now unchecked. Let's see if that solves it :-)

do you get them while reading HTML formatted mail offline? disable images in IE (there is a power toy to toggle image display)

No, I see the window pop-up on the inactive desktop next to me while I'm working on the laptop.

I installed Zone Alarm on recommendation from Software finds and it is definitely one of the best FREEware products I've seen. It will tell you exactly who is trying to get out and stop them in the future. Dowload is HERE

Zone alarm is a great piece of software, especially in this case, except, it's a pain in the ass to get everything that you want to come in or out all set.

I agree, Brian... I'm running Zone Alarm on the laptop but not the rarely used desktop.
