    Little Green Folders

I've been reading some posts concerning the Little Green Folders. I tried downloading it long ago when it first came out in Woody's newsletter. The program works ok. The only problem I have is that the .icl file/library only has one icon--the Little Green Folder. The illustration I saw originally had several icons such as zebra stripes, etc. I thought some could be useful if I wanted to shortcut a folder on the Desktop and really make it stand out. I have a few hundred "accessory" icons, so I can be "creative" without zebra stripes.
All the posts praising LGF seem to mention all the different designs; where did they go? Like the Easter Bunny, I've heard of it, but have yet to see it.

I dunno? I've been "involved" ever since Woody first mentioned it and the only icons I ever saw in the ICL are various sizes of green folders. Can you recall what "illustration" you're remembering?

    Re: Little Green Folders

Not a clue. "Somewhere", I have seen a screenshot showing a variety of folder options. The only icon I have available in the ICL is ONE green folder..no variations at all. Now, the only thing I have ever tried to change is Open Folders...No desire to be overly creative/make a "statement" with the Desktop. I have downloaded this thing many times since I first saw it in Woody's Windows Watch.
As one poster mentioned, there are now some dead links to LGF/My Properties. But, if this is the worst problem I ever have, I'm in wonderful shape!

    Re: Little Green Folders

Here's a screenshot of what I get when I open the ICL with IconForge. The reason I jumped in was because at the beginning, when people were having trouble getting the files, I put both MyProperties and the ICL in a Zip file and made it available for downloading from my web site. Somewhere later, I changed the location and folks were hitting a dead link. Try downloading and see if you don't get the six icons, as in the attached.

    Re: Little Green Folders

Hey David, you know what I (think) I just realized? When you run MYPROPERTIES and elect to change a folder, it only seems to show you ONE icon when you "browse" to the ICL folder that has SIX icons in it! I never gave that a notice before and it MUST be a function of whatever screen resolution you have set. The six icons in the ICL are for different sizes AND color depth. Is that what's heppening to you?

    Re: Little Green Folders

I was at 1024x768; changed to 800x600..no change: still just one green folder. Your site was the source of my last download. I have four other icl/libraries that work ok. There is a gremlin at work, but where is it hiding?
I just went through changing another icon, and my other libraries display several options. Hmmmm...

    Re: Little Green Folders

Well, David, you've stumbled onto something here. Let alone the fact that I never did anything with it but change to the green folder, without ever noticing that it was only showing one! I too just tried other ICL and DLL files from WITHIN the MyProperties program and sure enuf, all the icons in the file are shown in MyProperties. Obviously, there's something about Woody's ICL file that we're missing here.

By the way, if you're thirsting for icons, you might want to download ALLICONS.ZIP which I think I got from here. There's tons of 'em, including folders.

    Re: Little Green Folders

Ya know, I've tried this LGF a couple of times now, the most recent being about two weeks ago. You know what else? I can never get it to work! I put the .icl file in the system folder, run MyProperties.exe and select the appropriate icon. I never see the green open file in Windows Explorer. It's still displayed in MyProperties.exe, though. Any suggestions? Anyone?

Let's blame Woody....you just can't get good help, anymore. Thanks for the link; I'll check it out . You can't have too many icons; you can have more than you need, but never too many.

    Re: Little Green Folders

I put the icl in a C:IconsMiscellaneous folder; and I also left a copy in C:Green Folders. It worked either way. I think the "big trick" is to click the Rebuild Cache button after you make the selection. WHERE you put your icons doesn't matter, as long as they are on the hard drive and not a floppy--you just need to be able to find them when you Browse. Documentation is sorely lacking.
    Hope this helps,

    Jezsik

You are not alone in not getting it to work. My score is 2 out of 4 machines, which is why I started off the rather large thread in General Windows Solutions. I found today that if you open MyProperties then go to Explorer then back to MP, MP sits in the centre of Explorer and when you press Rebuild Cache you can see the icons change if the program is going to work.

Has anyone seen the Apply button in MyProperties not greyed out?

I think the original LGF was drawn with MicroAngelo which is available as a 30 day trial.

    Re: Little Green Folders

OK, for the attention of Michael and David! Since we're all three here in this thread, let me make this post here, and not be trying to keep two threads going at the same time. I don't know what the resolution to the MyProperties questions are (greyed out button, etc.) but I did do one thing as a test. Seems that there was something "different" about the ICL file that Woody created with Microangelo. So, I opened up his file with Icon Forge which I use, saved all six of his icons as ICO files, and then made my own library file (ICL) with Icon Forge. Then I opened up MyProperties and browsed to MY file and was able to see all six icons.

This probably doesn't help squat, but I've temporarily put that file on my web site as GREENFOLDER_REV.ICL, in case either of you want to go get it. Obviously, if one has other icon library files around such as ALLICONS.ZIP this isn't too necessary. Now, let's figure out if there's an alternate way of implementation instead of MyProperties.Exe

    Re: Little Green Folders

Al's new "rev" file works on my Win98SE system; but, the APPLY button is still greyed out. I guess the REBUILD CACHE button substitues by clearing shelliconcache?? The original was created with Microangelo, according to the info I have saved from "back then".
Is the new WinXP version mentioned backward compatible with Win98/ME, etc.? I am using MyProperties for the Open Folder only; Apply might be available for other options, I don't know.

    Re: Little Green Folders

I have only just caught up with this thread.
I'm the one who posted the original little green folder info and created the original green folder icon (discussed in an early Font Pharos column of mine).
Can't recall exactly what I created it with, maybe my registered Microangelo.
Anyway I realised it was not quite right for Windows XP so I have created a new one which I am using quite successfully with windows XP Pro. It is inserted by using the MyProperties functionality, which works fine.
It was created using several icon programs, not just Microangelo - took a while to get it to my satisfaction, mainly the colour gradients.
The new icon is on my web site and can be found at http://www.mcbiz.com.au/Downloads/LGF.zip or go to http://www.mcbiz.com.au/downloads.htm - to choose it yourself - it is a 6k file. It contains a number of images of the folder and your system should choose the appropriate one depending on your screen resolution. I run at 1600 x 1200 and mine works fine.
